Slide2The Ocean Floor
Slide3Long ago…
People long ago first thought there was no bottom to the ocean!
That’s why they called the lowest level “the abyss”, because it means “bottomless”.
Later, they thought it was flat everywhere.
Slide4The Ocean Floor
In the early 1900s, oceanographers used heavy lead weights lowered on ropes or cables to the ocean floor. They checked how deep the cable went, and made a map based on the depths.
Brainpop: Ocean Floor
Slide5Sonar
They used sonar to send out sound waves through the water.
Waves reflect off the bottom and return to a RECEIVER.
They can figure out the shape below from how the sound wave reflected.
Slide6Diagram of Sonar
Step 2-Detector- Picks up reflected sound wave.
Step 1 - Transducer – sends out sound wave
Slide7Activity: Ocean Floor Features
Share a laptop with the person next to you.
Look at this presentation on the class webpage.
Label your Ocean Floor Features diagram.
Try to figure out the meaning of each from the maps and diagrams.
Write out the actual meanings.
Slide8Label the ocean floor that includes the following features
A. SHORELINE
B. CONTINENTAL SHELF
C. CONTINENTAL SLOPE
D. TRENCH
H. RIFT
F. ABYSSAL PLAIN

G. RIDGES
Slide9Your task…
View the different drawings/models of the ocean floor.
Read the names of the FEATURES (the formations found on the bottom of the ocean).
Try to construct a definition for each feature.
Slide10Ocean Floor #1What do you infer the definition of each feature to be?
Slide11shoreline
continental shelf
continental slope
trench
abyssal plain
guyot
ridges
rifts

Slide14Now check your work!
Write the actual definition for each of the terms on the next slide…
