2. 1 꿀벌 보면 코끼리 '벌벌'_1/ p.12Reader’s Bank Level 10 In Kenya, elephants attacked the vegetable fields and farmers tried ⓐ to fight back with guns and poison. The elephants easily knocked down fences and barriers, but in 2009 researchers discovered a method that was 97 percent effective in ⓑ repelling elephants. A group of 17 farms were surrounded by a border of 170 beehives, ⓒ placed 10 meters apart. Elephants may be thick-skinned, but they don’t like bees for a really good reason. Bees are very good at targeting the vulnerable parts of even thick-skinned animals.

3. 1 꿀벌 보면 코끼리 '벌벌'_2/ p.12Reader’s Bank Level 10Elephant trunks are especially sensitive, and the aggressive African bees will fly right up inside them to sting ⓓ if necessary. Elephants attempted 32 raids over a three-year period. Only one got through the beeline; the rest ⓔ was quickly convinced to pack up their trunks and go.

4. 2 생각도 표현이 필요하다!_1/ p.14Reader’s Bank Level 10 In a study, several dozen four- and five-year-olds were (A) showing /shown patterns of colored bugs and asked to predict which wouldbe next in the sequence. In one group, the children simply solvedthe puzzles quietly by themselves. In the second group, they wereasked to explain into a tape recorder (B) what / how they weresolving each puzzle. And in the third group, the kids had anaudience: they had to explain their reasoning to their mothers, whosat near them, listening but not (C) offered / offering any help.

5. 2 생각도 표현이 필요하다!_2/ p.14Reader’s Bank Level 10Then each group was given patterns that were more complicated andharder to predict. The results? The children who solved the puzzlessilently did the worst of all. The ones who talked into a tape recorderdid better—the mere act of expressing their thinking process aloudhelped them think more critically and identify the patterns moreclearly. But the ones who were talking to a meaningful audience didbest of all.

6. 3 내 손 안의 VR 피팅 룸_1/ p.16Reader’s Bank Level 10 When you purchased clothes online, you probably have experiencedsome frustration. You are not alone. Many people experience the same thing. When the clothes are delivered, you realize that they don’t fit at all and want to return them. This can be quite a *hassle. However, a new technology might help you solve this problem. There are some smartphone apps like Yashe AI Virtual Fitting Room in which you can (A) physically / virtually try on clothes. You just need to take a photo of yourself, and this app will generate an *avatar, or a virtual image of you.

7. 3 내 손 안의 VR 피팅 룸_2/ p.16Reader’s Bank Level 10In some applications, you can also input your height, weight, and body type to improve sizing accuracy. Then you can try on various styles of clothes using your (B) customized / ready-made avatar. This way, shoppers can choose clothes that fit them perfectly. This new technology is (C) mutually / individually beneficial to both businesses and consumers. Companies can lower return rates and bring in more online sales while shoppers can pick out clothes that fit them best. * hassle 귀찮은[번거로운] 상황[일] * avatar 아바타(인터넷상의 공유 공간에서 유저(user)의 화신이 되는 캐릭터

8. Big Issue 4 COVID-19, 야생에서 온 불청객_1/ p.18Reader’s Bank Level 10 We humans destroy tropical forests and other wild landscapes, which are ⓐ home to many species of animals and plants — and within those creatures live so many unknown viruses. We cut trees, and we kill animals and then sell their meat on markets. By doing so, we ⓑ disrupt the ecosystems, and shake viruses loose from their natural hosts. When that happens, the homeless viruses need a new host. In this case the new host will most likely be humans since we would be the nearest to them. In fact, most pandemic diseases like Ebola, SARS, and now COVID-19 all originated from viruses in ⓒ wild animals.

9. Big Issue 4 COVID-19, 야생에서 온 불청객_2/ p.18Reader’s Bank Level 10 Now the whole world is competing to develop vaccines for COVID-19. However, it’s not a ⓓ fundamental solution. Rather, giving back their original habitats to plants and animals is a more effective way to prevent pandemic diseases. This way the viruses won’t have to cross from wild animals into the human population to find new ⓔ parasites.
