Ki Shin, MD University of WA School of Medicine, Assistant Dean for Clinical Medical Education, Western Washington WWAMI 112 East Broadway Avenue Montesano, WA 98563 Hello Port Angeles! I’m Kati Anderson, a first year medical stu-dent at UWSOM this Fall. I am excited to get to know the peo-ple of the beautiful Port Angeles community. I grew up in West-ern Washington as the third of seven children, and have fond childhood memories of climbing Mt. St. Helens, camping in the Olympic National Forest and whale watching with my family at Orcas Island. I received my undergraduate degree from UC Berkeley in the Bay Area, where I studied Integrative Biology and English Liter-ature and worked as coordinator of a shelter-based family clinic through Berkeley-UCSF’s Joint Medical Program. My inspira-tion for medicine was further fueled by my experiences as a volunteer in Eastern Nicaragua, where I saw patients in a pri-mary and acute care setting, including surgery and childbirth, at a rural hospital with no running water. This early exposure to rural medicine and the power of community-based care and patient-centered partnership has stuck with me, as well as the stories the patients and families shared. I have been working at an FQHC in the Portland area with an Outreach Clinic along the Springwater Corridor, where many of our patients who are experiencing housing or food insecurity come to access healthcare and resources. I have built relation-ships with patients and families over time, and been honored to be included in part of patients’ journeys toward increased health and well being. For fun, I enjoy spending time with friends and family, camping, hiking, swimming, reading, and eating good food. I’m excited to spend time in Port Angeles and I look forward to seeing you around town or in the clinic. Western Washington Entering Class of 2018 Targeted Rural Underserved Track http://depts.washington.edu/fammed/education/programs/trust TRUST seeks to provide a continuous connection between rural, small city underserved communities, medical education, and health professionals in our region. Our goal is to create a full-circle pipeline by guiding qualified students through a special curriculum that connects continuity communities in WWAMI to the University of Washington School of Medicine and its network of affiliated residency programs in an effort to help meet the workforce needs of the region.
