The trachea

divides into 2

Primary Bronchi that enter each lung. The primary bronchi course downward and outward, giving rise to three secondary bronchi in the right lung and two in the left lung, each of which supplies a pulmonary lobe. These lobar bronchi again divide , forming tertiary bronchi. The tertiary bronchi give rise to smaller and smaller bronchi whose terminal branches are called Bronchioles. Each Bronchioles enters a pulmonary lobule (pyramid-shape), and branches to form five to seven Terminal bronchioles.

BRONCHI

Trachea divides into branches forming the primary bronchi.Bronchi contain cartilaginous layer.Respiratory function of bronchi is to serve as conductors, whereas that of bronchioles is to serve as conductors as well as the sites of gas exchange.Bronchi are larger in diameter than bronchioles.Bronchi pass the air into bronchioles.Folded and lined by pseudostratified columnar epithelium.Goblet cells: PresentGlands : PresentBRONCHIOLESthe bronchi divide into branches forming bronchioles. bronchioles do not have cartilage. bronchioles is to serve as conductors as well as the sites of gas exchange.Bronchioles are smaller in diameter than bronchi. bronchioles pass the air into alveoli.Highly folded and lined with simple columnar ciliated or with cuboidal non-ciliated cells alternating with Clara cells.Goblet cells: Absent(few only in large bronchioles)Glands : Absent

When alveoli open in the terminal bronchiole, it is called

respiratory bronchiole [respiratory bronchiole is similar to terminal bronchiole,

except that the wall is interrupted by numerous alveoli where gas exchange occurs]Proceeding distally, the number of alveoli opening into the respiratory bronchioles is greatly increased till we have only a duct of alveoli (alveolar duct)The alveolar ducts lead to distended spaces called alveolar sacs. Several alveoli open in the wall of these sacs.Alveoli: are air spaces, thus responsible for the spongy structure of the lung. Gas exchange occurs across the wall of the alveoliThe Respiratory Part
