IPS KIDS IN NEED JANUARY-MARCH • Warrior Kids Club 8-week program at IPS School 49 Mindulness, meditation and yoga for kids (Grades 4-6) APRIL 6-9 • Foundation-sponsored Swim Lessons IPS and MLK Center MAY 15 • International Water Safety Day Swim tests and stroke evaluation for kids The Riviera Club UPCOMING EVENTS Ten people die each day from unintentional drowning, and on average 2 of them are under age 14. Drowning is responsible for more deaths among children ages one to four than any other cause except birth defects. Among those 1-14, drowning is the second-leading cause of unintentional injury-related death behind motor vehicle crashes. For every child who dies from drowning, another ve receive emergency care for nonfatal submersion injuries. 64% of African-American, 45% of Hispanic/Latino, and 40% of Caucasian children have few to no swimming skills. When parents have no/low swimming skills (or competence) ability, their children are unlikely to have procient swimming skills. This affects: 78% of African-American children 62% of Hispanic/Latino children 67% of Caucasian children African-American children ages 5 to 19 drown in swimming pools at rates 5.5 times higher than those of Caucasian children in the same age range. 79% of children in households with incomes less than $50,000 have few-to-no swimming skills. DONATE TODAY! THE FACTS “We currently have around 466 students enrolled in free and reduced lunch. Our community is ranked 18.5% below the poverty level. We are in a food desert. Many stores in walking distance have been closed. We have a small food pantry, but no true support or backing. Most donations come from me or staff members. Majority of our students have transportation needs and therefore are limited in attending after school activities. Because we do not have a bus with afterschool activities, normally only those who walk or can be picked up, will attend. We have a high number of mental health issues. Many are generational issues, but we still deal with it on a daily basis.” Sonnie Cox Administrative Assistant IPS William Penn #49 APRI

L-MAY • Bringing Water Safety to Local Schools Longfelllow’s WHALE Tails - American Red Cross JUNE 5-12 • Indianapolis Water Safety Week The Riviera Club & Foundation will be offering a variety of programs, giveaways, and water safety information during this week to keep you safe. Learn about pool rules, bicycle safety, sun protection, participate in a swim lesson or tread competition and more. RIVI.ORG Programming in 2020 will include water safety, yoga and mindfulness, community garden planning, fun events to engage the community, and more. “SPONSOR-A -SWIMMER” We have a goal of serving 1,000 annually in water safety by Summer 2021. We would like to go above and beyond to provide actual swim lessons to as many of those kids as possible. Because a large portion of children in the targeted populations do not own a swimsuit, it will be imperative for us to provide one to each sponsored child. With a $25 donation YOU can “SPONSOR-A-SWIMMER” and provide a child an opportunity to learn life saving water safety and swim instruction. To donate, click on our link at Rivi.org. If you have any questions or would like to volunteer, please contact the Riviera Club Foundation Director, Jacqueline Burkholder, at jburkholder@rivifoundation.org. Please join us in propelling the future of our community! OUR MISSION To advance the development of youth and amateur athletics throughout the community with attention toward serving underprivileged populations. We aim to enhance the lives of families throughout Indianapolis with water safety, health and wellness programs. The Rivi Foundation has been working with the Indy Aquatics Alliance to bring swimming worlds together. As a result, we were able to distribute 150 complimentary tickets to the inaugural International Swim League (ISL) competition October 5th and 6th. The event was a te

am-based competition with fast-paced race sessions held at the IUPUI Natatorium. The ISL transformed the Natatorium into a production of impressive lights, music, and many of the world’s fastest swimmers. The Riviera Club was chosen as a team ambassador for the California Condor’s swim team. The Condors team, led by GM Ja - son Lezak 7-time Olympic medalist, was full of spirit and talent. Their roster boasted swimmers Lily King, Olivia Smoliga, and Ariarne Titmus. Rivi fans could be spotted throughout wearing club shirts and waving posters to cheer for the Condors and their favorite swimmers! We hope you all enjoyed the event! INTERNATIONAL SWIM LEAGUE - FUN FOR THE FAMILY We are proud to have launched our rst community outreach program in January. The Warrior Kids Club is an after-school program currently being held at IPS School #49. It is an eight-week program providing yoga, mindfulness, and a unique lesson each week. Erin Peckenpaugh, Founder of Rise Yoga & Events is thoughtfully, “Providing a safe space for stillness and rest to busy bodies and minds.” She adds, “It is a true gift. I’m so honored the Riviera Club Foundation is willing to invest in these kids. It is making a difference. The kids are practicing at home and teaching their siblings.” Our Director, Jacqueline Burkholder, recently participated in a Warrior Kids Club class. “Too many children today are suf - fering from high levels of anxiety, stress, body image issues, self-doubt, depression, etc. We must take action and provide today’s youth with coping mechanisms to help them live happy and fullling lives. Going to the Warrior Kids Club was an incredible experience. The kids opened up about things that were troubling them. Erin taught about self-love, she asked the kids to write letters to their future self, including what they love about their self. The kids were able to build con - dence by trying new yoga poses, and enjoy relaxation through breathing practices and savasana. What we are providing through this program impacts these kids far beyond the yoga mat. Thank you for your support.” FOU

4 NDATION NEWS WARRIOR KIDS CLUB We ended
NDATION NEWS WARRIOR KIDS CLUB We ended 2019 with a few fundraisers to spread the word about the Rivi Foundation and raise money to support future programs. We would graciously like to thank Lori Bisser and Delaney King for donating their time and talent at our Yoga Fundraisers on November 29th and December 2nd. Simplicity Cold Pressed Juice generously donated their high quality, delicious juice for guests to enjoy. The events were held in the ballroom which was beautifully decorated for the holidays and followed by a reception in the lounge. December 16th was our Monday Night Football fundraiser featuring the Colts vs Saints. The snowfall did not stop us from having a great turnout with over 80 guests! Patrons watched the game from a large projector screen in the ball - room and televisions in the lounge. Thanks to a very generous anonymous donor, adults enjoyed complimentary beer and wine served at both bars. The Club’s kitchen set up a delicious buffet of pub favorites including homemade pizza and a nacho bar. At halftime the Rivi Foundation board president, Andrew Follman, gave the audience some background about the Foundation. He additionally introduced other Riviera Club Foundation board members Mason Hughes and Matt Deverall and announced the new Director, Jacqueline Burkholder. After this the VIP parking spot auction commenced producing TWO winners: The Scott Weaver Family and the School #84 Dad’s Club. Thank you very much to our parking spot winners and everyone who made donations that night, raising $3,100!
