1. Minimalism is a style of art and design that became widely recognised and popular in the 1960’s but the main ideas behind it have been at the forefront of most creative movements since the 1920’s.The “minimalist” approach to art, design, music , fashion and architecture has evolved and continues to be very fashionable today. Its also an uninteresting way of developing your own ideas and giving them a unique style Minimalists ask the question: How much can you strip away from an item — paintings, sculptures, buildings, furniture — without losing its essential purpose and identity?1. Minimalism: A school of abstract painting and sculpture that emphasizes extreme simplification of form, as by the use of basic shapes and monochromatic palettes of primary colours, objectivity, and anonymity of style. Also called ABC art, minimal art, reductivism, rejective art.2. Minimalism: Use of the fewest and barest essentials or elements, as in the arts, literature, or design. If you have an internet connection you should use this link to find out more: https://www.sitepoint.com/what-is-minimalism/Reducing the variety of shapes and colours within a Design or Art work idea is the easiest way to start exploring minimalism. The first example below is limited to 3 shapes and colours! The second example is more refined.Task 1: Draw 3 simple objects from your bedroom using 3 shapes and 3 colours. HINT: Look carefully at the fast food example to spot the clever uses of shapes like the pizza crust- stretch the height or width for greater possibilities! If you have an internet connection find extra tutorials here: https://drupalize.me/blog/201506/illustration-made-simple-shapesTask 2: Charley Harper is a famous American artist and graphic designer that developed his own signature style called ‘minimal realism,’ capturing the spirit of his natural world subjects using as few lines and shapes as possible. His art uses geometric shapes and nearly always has a symmetrical layout- the first 3 examples have vertical lines of symmetry. Create your own Charlie Harper style animal face drawing using a similar approach to task 1 but this time you can use a greater range of shapes and colours.Design Styles: Minimalism

3. The Bauhaus, was a German art school operational from 1919 to 1933 that combined crafts and the fine arts. The school became famous for its modern and often minimalist approach to design, which strove to combine beauty with function and attempted to bring together the ideas of artistic creativity and mass manufactured “machine made” objects. The Bauhaus trained many of the most famous designers of the early 20th century and is still a huge influence on new designers and artists today. From fine art to architecture – textiles to product design the legacy of the Bauhaus and its clean minimal style is visible everywhere. For 100 years of Bauhaus anniversary , 99designs ( a high profile online design forum) invited its international community of creatives to put a Bauhaus spin on some of the world’s most recognizable designsThe Bauhaus- The Beginning of MinimalismIf you have an internet connection visit: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BauhausTask 3: Select 2 other well known “brand” logos to re design in a minimalist “Bauhaus” style. Use drawing tools like a ruler and compass to achieve technical accuracy and focus on stripping the detail back….
