FAQ How can I get started with tado°? Once your tado° devices are installed, it is easy to control heating or cooling via the app and directly on your devices. Getting started with the tado° app The tado° app helps you control your heating and cooling fro m anywhere. The Home Screen of the app gives you a quick overview of your indoor climate. This screen shows the measured and target temperature of all your rooms and your hot water zone. It also shows other widgets like Air Comfort, Geofencing, Energy S avings, and Boiler Repair Services . Tapping on any of the room widgets will take you to that respective Room Screen . Here, you can get more information about the room's indoor climate. The Room Screen shows the measured temperature, the target tempe rature and the humidity levels in the room. Using the Smart Schedule , you can set a personalized heating sched

2 ule for the room. You can also see te
ule for the room. You can also see temperature and humidity history for th e room by tapping on the Climate Report icon. Even if you've set a schedule, you can make temporary changes to the temperature or settings at any time via the app. *** The Settings sect ion of the main menu helps you to manage your tado° Home and your devices. In this section, you can:  change settings for tado° Skills  add or remove devices  add or edit Home details  add or remove people from your tado° Home  set or change individual Room se ttings  modify Notification settings How does tado° control different heating systems? tado° can control almost all kinds of heating systems. The precise way tado° controls your system depends on which heating system you have. tado° devices usually either r eplace existing room thermostats, radiator thermostats and controllers or conn

ect directly to the boiler. For more information on which tado° products are recommended for your heating system, please consult the corresponding article below. Please note that one Internet Bridge per home is required to connect the tado° heating devices to the internet. One central boiler supplying a radiator heating system This system is usual ly controlled by a central room thermostat (and/or programmer). One central boiler supplying an underfloor heating system This system is usually controlled by a room th ermostat for each room. One central boiler supplying a radiator heating system divided into multiple zones This system is usually controlled by a room thermostat (and/o r a programmer) for each zone. One communal boiler or district heating system supplying a radiator heating system for multiple apartments This system is usually control led directly on the individu

al radiators without any central control by a room thermostat (and/or a programmer). One central boiler supplying a part of the radiator and/o r underfloor heating system and another heat source supplying the rest of the heating system This system is usually controlled by one room thermostat and/or programmer for each part of the house. How does tado° control multi - room heating systems with multiple heat sources? Some homes have multiple heat sources, for example, one central boiler, and a secondary boiler for a separate part of the house. Another common use case is that a part of the house is supplied by one boiler while some rooms a equippe d with an independent underfloor heating. In these cases, the central boiler is controlled with the Smart Thermostat and the other areas are controlled independently. 1. One Smart Thermostat controls the boiler The boiler is controlled by the c

One Smart Thermostat controls the boiler and the radiators supplied from another heat source are contro lled with Smart Radiator Thermostats (recommended for radiators) The boiler is controlled by the central Smart Thermostat. The radiators supplied with heat from the second boiler are controlled with tado° Smart Radiator Thermostats independently. This way the complete house is regulated with tado° and benefit from the smart features of tado°. 3. One Smart Thermostat controls the boiler and the underfloor heating supplied from another heat source is controlled with additional Smart Thermostats (recommend ed for UFH) The boiler is controlled by the central Smart Thermostat. The additional Smart Thermostats control the un

derfloor heating rooms independently. This way the complete house is regulated with tado° and benefit from smart features of tado°. How does tado° control a multi - zone radiator heating system? In most heating setups with multiple zones, room thermostats regulate zone valves that provide heat for all rooms in each zone based on the temperature measured and/or a set schedule. In these cases, Smart Thermostats replace the room thermostats and allow to control the zones individually with tado°. You can enhance this setup by replacing an installed programmer with an Extension Kit. 1. Smart Thermostats control radiator zones independently Smart Thermostats control the zone valves independently based on the room temperature measured in the respective zone. The temperature in individual rooms is controlled by changing the settings on the radiator thermostats. 2. Smart Thermostats control z

one va lves and the Extension Kit controls the boiler The Smart Thermostats control the zone valves based on the room temperature measured in the respective zone. The Extension Kit will turn on the boiler when any of the Smart Thermostats request heat and opens the respective zone valve. The temperature in individual rooms is controlled by changing the settings on the radiator thermostats. 3. One Smart Thermostat controls the boiler and the zone valve, another Smart Thermostat only controls the zone valve and one Extension Kit turns on the boiler The first Smart Thermostat has an integrated timer and controls both the zone valve and the boiler. The second Smart Thermostat only controls the zone valve. The Extension Kit will turn on the boiler when the second S mart Thermostat requests heat and opens the respective zone valve. How does tado° control an underfloor heating system w

ith a central thermostat? Underfloor heating systems are usually controlled by a room thermostat per room each. Smart Thermostats repl ace existing room thermostats in these setups and allow the user to control each room individually. You can replace all underfloor heating thermostats with a tado° Smart Thermostat or only some of them. You can enhance this setup by installing an Extension Kit to control the boiler. 1. Smart Thermostats control underfloor heating rooms Smart Thermostats control rooms with underfloor heating independently but do not turn on the boiler. The boiler fires on demand, based on the flow temperature, or a schedule set on the boiler controller. Rooms without Smart Thermostats remain controlled by conventional room thermostats. 2. Smart Thermostats control all rooms with underfloor heating and an Extension Kit controls the boiler (recommended) tado° turns on th

e boiler when any room calls for heat and heats the individual rooms. This setup allows ideal temperature control of every room and ensures the boiler does not turn on in vain. 3. Smart Thermostats control some rooms with underfloor heating and an Extensi on Kit controls the boiler tado° will turn on the boiler when any of the tado° controlled rooms calls for heat. The rooms not controlled by tado° only receive heat when one of the tado° controlled rooms requests heat. How does tado° control radiator he ating systems without a central thermostat? In homes without access to the boiler, for example, apartment buildings, radiators are controlled by radiator thermostats only. tado° Smart Radiator Thermostats can be fitted on most thermostatic radiator valves and control the room temperature based on a setpoint temperature and the room temperature measured. This setup can be enhanced with

a wireless Smart Thermostat for more accurate temperature measurement in larger rooms. Do I need to have Wi - Fi to use tado° for heating systems? No, tado° for heating systems only requires an internet connection. The tado° Bridge which connects all devices to the internet is directly plugged into the router using an ethernet cable. Why does tado° need to check the compatibility of my heating system? While tado° works with a great range of heating systems, there are a few that tado° currently does not support. So before you install tado° devices, our engineers may need to make sure t hat tado° will work with your system. These checks usually take no more than two working days. This will also ensure that tado° works without any issues after the installation. Please do not proceed to install tado° while our engineers are checking your he ating system. If you install without waiting for the compa

tibility check or our step - by - step installation instructions, the system may not work correctly due to missing configuration options. 1. Smart Radiator Thermostats are ins talled on all radiators in all commonly used rooms (recommended) Smart Radiator Thermostats in the same room are synchronized. When there is a call for heat all Smart Radiator Thermostats will open simultaneously. The temperature is measured by one select ed Smart Radiator Thermostat per room which acts as the measuring device. For a more accurate reading of the temperature at the room’s center, a wireless Smart Thermostat can be added. 2. Smart Radiator Thermostats are installed on some radiators in the rooms If not all radiators in a room are equipped with Smart Radiator Thermostats the remaining conventional ones have to be controlled manually, as before. It is recommended to set these to frost protectio

n to avoid interference with the tado° controlle d radiators. How does tado° control radiator heating systems with a central thermostat? In systems with a central room thermostat, the thermostat controls the boiler based on the temperature measured. In these systems, the Smart Thermostat replaces the central thermostat and directly controls the boiler. If the existing central thermostat is a wireless thermostat, an Extension Kit can be installed to use the Smart Thermostat wirelessly. Additionally, existing thermostatic radiator thermostats can be repl aced by Smart Radiator Thermostats to control rooms individually. 1. One wired Smart Thermostat controls the boiler The complete house is heated based on the reference temperature measured by the Smart Thermostat. The temperature in individual rooms is co ntrolled by changing the settings on the radiator thermostats. 2. One wireless Smart

The complete ho use is heated based on the reference temperature measured by the Smart Thermostat. The temperature in individual rooms is controlled by changing the settings on the radiator thermostats. 3. One Smart Thermostat controls the boiler and Smart Radiator The rmostats are installed in all commonly used rooms (recommended) All rooms are controlled individually. If there is a call for heat in any room tado° will turn on the boiler. The Smart Thermostat measures the reference temperature only for the room in whic h it is located. Note: Any rooms without Smart Radiator Thermostats will receive heat when the boiler is turned on and the thermostatic radiator thermostats should be adapted accordingly. It is recommended to set the

m to frost protection and only turn them up when the room is used. 4. One Smart Thermostat controls the boiler and Smart Radiator Thermostats are installed in some rooms, but not in the room with the Smart Thermostat (not recommended) Rooms with Smart Radiator Thermostats will turn on the bo iler if there is a call for heat in any room. The room with the Smart Thermostat will receive heat when any of the rooms with tado° installed is calling for heat. In this setup, the room in which the Smart Thermostat is installed can get warmer than the te mperature set on the Smart Thermostat itself. Which heating systems does the Smart Thermostat support? tado° works with almost all heating systems in apartments and houses that have their own heating boiler or apartments with single - storey gas heating. Regardless of how old the heating system is or whether it uses radiators or underfloor heat

ing. Currently, tado° is compatible with almost all heating systems, including:  combi, system and heat - only boilers  conventional and condensing boilers  hydronic underfloor systems  electric underfloor systems (maximum switching current of 6A)  air source and ground source heat pumps (heating only)  zoned systems (one tado° Smart Thermostat per zone)  switched live systems  p otential - free (dry - contact) systems with low - voltage analog and digital bus interfaces Is tado° compatible with my boiler? tado° works with most boilers. The only requirement for tado° to work with your boiler is that it communicates in a language that t ado° can understand and process. The most common ways in which thermostats communicate with boilers are through simple relay (on/off) connections or through digital communication systems. Relay (on/off) heating sy

16 stems An on/off relay connection wo
stems An on/off relay connection works li ke a normal electric switch. When there is a call for heat, the electric circuit closes to switch on the boiler. And when the desired temperature is reached, the circuit opens to switch the boiler and heating off. tado° is compatible with almost all boil ers that support relay connections. The Smart Thermostat has one relay connection which can be used to control heating. The Extension Kit has two relay connections, one of which controls heating. The second relay connection is most often used to control h ot water, but can also be used to control a pump or a second heating stage. Digital heating systems In contrast to on/off heating systems, digital heating systems can modulate or adjust the amount of heat supplied by the boiler. If there is a request for a minor increase in temperature, the room thermostat can power the boiler accordingly to meet t

17 hat specific request rather than going
hat specific request rather than going full blast. Apart from modulating the temperature, some digital heating systems also allow two - way communication between room thermostats and boilers . This means that more complex information like the current temperature, the set temperature, and error codes can be transferred between these devices. tado° is compatible with OpenTherm boilers . It can control heating and hot water by working with most other boilers that support digital communication*. In case your boiler controls hot water production, you will also be able to control these settings via tado° once it is connected to your boiler. As Open Therm is a digital bus interface, an Extension Kit generally is not required f or hot water control. If you do not already have a wired room thermostat the Extension Kit is needed as a wireless receiver for the Smart Thermostat. Is tado° compatible with my system boiler? Generally, tado° is compa

20 tible with your fully commissioned and
tible with your fully commissioned and functioning system boiler . tado° can also replace most existing controllers to control the heating and hot water. In the UK, system boilers are usually installed with an external domestic hot water tank. The boiler supplies heated w ater to the hot water tank and one or more heating circuits. Such a system uses 2 - port valves (S - plan system) or a 3 - port valve (Y - plan systems) to divert the heated water to these different circuits. In such systems, room thermostats and programmers are n ot wired directly to the boiler. Instead, they are connected to the boiler via a wiring center. If you have an S - plan or Y - plan system and have existing controllers connected to it, tado° can replace these controllers. If you have a new system boiler or wa nt to connect tado° directly to your wiring center, it is best to get in touch with a heating engineer.* Some syst

Is tado° compatible with electric heating systems? Electric underfloor heating tado° can be connected to electric underfloor heating if these requirements are met: 1. The electric underfloor heating system switches no more than 6 Amps . 2. The system does not require a floor temperature sensor . You can determine if your underfloor heating system uses more than 6 Amps or requires a floor temperature sensor by consulting the user manual or asking a certified elec trician.
