1. The Fig Tree Learning CentreANNUAL REPORT2021 -2022

2. Project on FlowersIn July and August children from classes 1 to 5 at the Tarabanahalli School worked on a project on flowers with Gousia and Sarojini. They learnt about the parts of the flower, pollination and the stages of growth. Together they made charts, drawings and models created dialogues to explain pollination, wrote poems and read stories. They made a mobile display and created a collage to show the cycle from seed to fruit.

3. Project on the Seasons – October 2021 to March 2022Children worked together at the Tarabanahalli Gvt. Primary School making a book about the seasons which included poems, mind maps and their observations .The younger children made a collage of the different seasons over the year indicating the months.

4. Library ActivitiesFrom January Gousia has been going once a week when possible to a Learning Centre in Silvepura called Namma Library and doing some library activities in Hindi. In June we were able to restart the library activities at the Tarabanahalli Gvt. Primary School and children were able to take books and reading cards home. They also listened to ‘read alouds‘ and shared book talks with each other. In addition they created their own story books. Despite lockdowns and closures we were able to keep the library activities going throughout the year.

5. Creating and using the Kannada primer From the beginning of 2021 the FTLC team has worked on creating a Kannada primer. As the children returned to school we have been able to use it with the children of Tarabanahalli Gvt. Primary School. From January 2022 Gousia and Sarojini worked with the children three times a week, dividing them into three groups according to their abilities. Following the long absence from classes many children had forgotten how to read and were urgently in need of some remedial work.We were able to xerox copies of the text and worked intensively with the 3rd, 4th and 5th standard children to help them recover the skills they had lost. The primer was based on the method of a Telugu text developed by the Early Literacy Project, TISS.

6. Creating a medicinal gardenOctober 2021 - March 2022 More than 50 medicinal plants have been planted and drip irrigation has been installed to conserve water. The plants have now been labeled with information about their uses in preparation for future workshops with children and teachers.

7. Creating educational resources on the environment The team at FTLC has continued to work closely with the group at the Nature Conservation Foundation and have contributed to the discussions on a number of materials particularly related to local trees and the seasons. Some reading cards on specific trees are in the process of being printed. These resources are being made freely available both in English and Kannada on an open source platform.

8. Workshops with teachers In January we had a workshop with the team from APF on story telling. It was the first workshop we had conducted since March 2020. We are looking forward to having more workshops in the coming year.In March we shared Kannada materials related to creative writing with a group working in a Govt. Primary school called Tranquil Charitable Foundation. The teachers then supported children to make their own books. (See picture below.)

9. Workshop on seeds with children at FTLCOn March 22nd 2022 we held the first workshop for children at FTLC since the first lockdown in April 2020. We look forward to using the space in the coming year.
