Boosting Morale, Building Resilience

What does Leadership Theory tell us ?Slide2

Why Does Morale Need Boosting ?

It is the

complexities and subtleties

of the emotions that many teachers experience and manage in every school

day

T

eaching

increasing number of those who have behavioural problems, those who find it

difficult to engage in learning

and those who are emotionally anxious and

troubled

O

ngoing

demands on their

intellectual energy, competence and capacity

to connect self and subject and students that distinguishes the teaching self from the selves of other professionals.

Many

teachers would argue that coping with adverse circumstances in the minefields of every school day, although at its best immensely rewarding, is also

emotionally draining and physically exhausting

.

In

times when

organisational and professional change

are inevitable in order to meet new local, national and global social and economic

challengesSlide3

Two Schools of Thought

Thrive, don’t survive. Build resilience.

Be honest about the nature of the job. Help teachers to feel a sense of purpose to their work. Put them in the driving seat and give them an increased stake in the success of the school.

2)

Build Morale – Intentionally

Go out of your way to identifying key school values that are being exhibited. Demonstrate empathy. Show you are “journeying with them.”Slide4

1) Principles of Boosting Morale

Be out there with them

What do we celebrate ?

How do we celebrate ?

Be intentional

The benefits of rewarding staff

A word of caution Slide5

Examples of Celebration #1

Cyclical Celebrations

- seasonal themes, key milestones, individual birthdays, marriages and reunions.

Recognition Ceremonies

: Public applause and acknowledgement for a job well done, attaining specific goals, achieving a promotion,

Celebrations of Triumph

- special occasions for accentuating collective accomplishments, - winning a championship, beating forecasts, launching a new initiative, opening a new office, plant or store.

Rituals for Comfort and "Letting Go"

- not all organisational life is about victory : sometimes there's calamity and loss - an experiment that failed, death of a colleague, layoffs of employees. These occasions can be marked by ceremony and ritual to help people let go and move on. Slide6

Examples of Celebration #2

Personal Transitions

- people come and go in organisations and there need to be ways to celebrate entrances and exits, initiations, separations and other life passages.

Workplace Altruism

- celebrations of doing good for others, pulling together to help others, promoting social change, showing appreciation to customers and clients

Events

- a company's anniversary, opening day, holidays, end of term

Play

- energising meetings and conventions, poking fun, games and sporting eventsSlide7

2) Building Resilience

More forward-looking and positive than stress management

Key question :

‘What type of training, support, work environment, culture and leadership and management practices will

build resilience ?”

There exists a powerful

link

between the perceived autonomy of

a teacher

and their resilience to

the day to day stresses of school lifeSlide8

Practical Steps Forward

S

chool

leaders

to provide staff at all levels to exercise professional discretion and therefore exercise control over their circumstances – within clear bounds determined by the aims, values and context of the school

Provide staff with opportunities to reflect

constructively on their experiences, voice concerns and access appropriate guidance, supervision and support and develop the personal and professional skills necessary to meet challenges.

Help staff to

not only “bounce back”, but move forward. Slide9

FRED / ABCD Award

chocs

ABCD Staff-Staff

D

espite not doing medical anymore will still ensure pupils are seen to and will be the first to rush to help when first aid is called for urgently. She is a good member of the team.

She has done a fantastic job at juggling the BTEC inspection, FAME and GCSE performances… not to mention the rest!

F

or letting us all use his printers when pretty much every other printer was broken!Slide11

FRED Student - Staff

He is a very kind and polite librarian. When

i

come in the library in the morning he is always saying hello and is nice to everybody.

Because she puts up with our loud class on every

monday

, so I nominate Ms. Begum for the FRED Award

M

r luck this week because he has pushed me very far in my maths and kept me going through hard questionsSlide12
