2. Founded in 1983, the Canadian Association for Underwater Science is a non-profit, all volunteer organization with a mandate for promoting safe diving practices and developing peer-reviewed standards of practice for scientific diving by its members. It provides a national forum for information exchange and policy-making for scientific diving, and its goals are to:Promote the development of underwater science;Promote the safety and welfare of individual members and affiliates who engage in underwater science;Advance the science and practice of scientific diving; andDevelop and maintain a standard for scientific diving in Canada.Canadian Association for Underwater Science Association canadienne des sciences subaquatiquescaus.ca info@caus.caMandateNovember 2021

3. Scientific diving is defined as:Canadian Association for Underwater Science Association canadienne des sciences subaquatiquescaus.ca info@caus.caDefinitionDiving performed to collect specimens or data for scientific use under the auspices of an educational or research institute operating in accordance with the Canadian Association for Underwater Science Standard of Practice for Scientific Diving.Note: Scientific diving does not include diving conducted for construction, including excavation, salvage, demolition, destruction, maintenance, repair or inspection of underwater structures, nor the collection of organisms for consumption or commercial use.November 2021

6. Canadian Association for Underwater Science Association canadienne des sciences subaquatiquescaus.ca info@caus.caScientific Diving ActivityApproximately 200 active scientific divers at member institutions.Since 2011, over 21,000 scientific dives - close to 1 million minutes of bottom time - have been logged by scientific divers at member institutions.Since 2011, only eight diving incidents or accidents. Most dives are shallow, scuba dives:72% ≤10m dive depth25% 11-20m dive depth2.5% 21-30m dive depth0.5% 31-40m dive depthonly two member institutions use surface supply gear November 2021

7. Canadian Association for Underwater Science Association canadienne des sciences subaquatiquescaus.ca info@caus.caCAUS and the CSAThe Canadian Standards Association (CSA) has exempted scientific diving from both its Operational safety code for diving operations (CSA-Z275.2) and Competency Standard for Diving Operations (CSA-Z275.4), and directs divers engaged in scientific diving to the CAUS Standard of Practice for Scientific Diving. In some jurisdictions the CSA standards Z275.2 and Z275.4 (and in some cases, the CAUS Standard of Practice for Scientific Diving) are referenced in occupational health and safety diving regulations. Check with your Provincial or Territorial occupational health and safety regulator for details prior to commencing scientific diving operations. All members must understand that where diving legislation is in place, it has precedence over the CAUS Standard. However, if the CAUS or CSA Standards are referenced in legislation, they have the force of law.November 2021

8. Canadian Association for Underwater Science Association canadienne des sciences subaquatiquescaus.ca info@caus.caBenefits of CAUS MembershipExemption – in some jurisdictions (but not all), CAUS membership greatly simplifies compliance with health and safety regulations.Reciprocity – easily share divers between member organizations.Plug-and-play manual – no need to write your own Diving Safety Manual from scratch. In both French and English.Community standard – rely on an accepted community standard to ensure program safety.Pooled statistics – use pooled stats when discussing the safety of scientific diving with regulators.Canada-wide knowledge base – call on scientific diving experts, any time, country-wide.Connections – CAUS maintains links with numerous other agencies, including the Diving Certification Board of Canada, CSA, American Academy of Underwater Sciences, European Scientific Diving Panel, WSDTC and ISO.November 2021

9. The CAUS holds its Annual General Meeting and Scientific Diving Symposium every year in the spring. The minutes from previous AGMs are available on the website. CAUS members also have access to the standardized Scientific Diver Level I Dive Theory Exam. The use of this exam by all members ensures consistency of competency evaluation across members. The CAUS has also compiled a Summary of Diving OHS Regulations across Canada. This useful resource (available at caus.ca) assists members in determining the status of scientific diving in their jurisdiction.CAUS Executive members always happy to offer advice or comment on scientific diving operations, regulations or programs. 10. Canadian Association for Underwater Science Association canadienne des sciences subaquatiquescaus.ca info@caus.caHow do I get "CAUS certified?"CAUS does not certify divers, and there is no such thing as "CAUS certification." CAUS develops and maintains the Standard of Practice for Scientific Diving, which details competency, training and operational requirements for CAUS members. Scientific diver training is conducted by CAUS member organizations. What are the different Scientific Diver categories?CAUS member organizations can provide training that will allow scientific divers to attain several different ratings (see Standard of Practice for Scientific Diving for details):Scientific Diver in-Training - must meet basic entry requirements, must dive with Scientific Diver I, II or DSO, must not dive deeper than 20m, must dive during daylight hours and must not dive in hazardous conditions or use special modes or equipment.Scientific Aquarium Diver - must meet basic entry requirements, must accumulate 12 logged aquarium dives and 8 hours bottom time. A Scientific Aquarium Diver is limited to diving solely in an aquarium.Scientific Diver I - must meet all requirements of Scientific Diver-in-Training, must have accumulated 25 logged dives and 15 hours bottom time including planning and executing one dive to 20m under the direct supervision of the DSO and three others under the direct supervision of the DSO or other Scientific Diver I or II. A Scientific Diver I is limited to a depth of 20m.Scientific Diver II - must be a Scientific Diver I, must be registered for an approved project that required diving between 20m-40m, must complete an exam on the physics and physiology of deeper diving with a grade of at least 75%, and must plan and execute 4 dives deeper than 20m and up to 40m, with at least one to 40m under the direct supervision of the DSO, and demonstrate proficiency in various areas applicable to deeper diving. A Scientific Diver II is limited to a depth of 40m.Two Frequently Asked QuestionsNovember 2021

11. Canadian Association for Underwater Science Association canadienne des sciences subaquatiquescaus.ca info@caus.caEmail info@caus.ca for a membership application or download one from the caus.ca website. The Standard of Practice for Scientific Diving outlines the specifics required of a scientific diving program. The CAUS By-law details membership requirements and organizational procedures. Both are available for download and review at caus.ca.Yearly dues are $350.For more information email info@caus.ca.How to JoinNovember 2021
