In the Beginning~
Problems Identified
Topics that indicated there was a problem~
Change in culture from Community Colleges to University setting
Higher level of responsibility expected
High volume of students asking repetitive questions
Concerns on academic preparedness
Concerns on technical preparednessSlide3
Conversations Began
Identifying Commonalities & Stakeholders
Who and what did these identified problems have in common?
Focus was always the student
Flow of communication or dissemination of information appeared a focal point
All areas of student services or student affairs plus academic support services became involved
It was determined that many of these issues were solved on-campus through the freshman orientation processSlide4
Development On-Line Orientation
First Steps
Beginning Objectives
Establish an online orientation for transfer students that would address the needs in evidence
Include additional modules that are major specific for handbooks, lab requirements, accreditation, etc.
To address issues of student procrastination, require orientation before enrollment is allowedSlide5Slide6
Implementation
Fall 2014 – Fall 2017
SMSU 101 Online Orientation
Uses D2L Brightspace
Has been updated each term with new information
Has 11 Modules and 37 Submodules
Requires 3 assignments
Provides 3 video clips, 20 web links, 4 PowerPoints and takes approximately 25 minutes to completeSlide7Slide8Slide9Slide10
Lessons Learned
Some Surprises~
Because we tied enrollment to successful completion of the orientation ~
Fewer course drops, withdraws and FQ grades
Fewer “Early Alerts” (academic warning system)
Business Services able to receive tuition payments with fewer difficulties
Better success rate with first semester education placements
Better success rate with nursing students (tied into NURS 300 curriculum)Slide11
Lessons Learned
Continued~
Additional qualitative results
Productivity of student services has increased as student questions have significantly decreased
Students have learned the “How do I …” questions.
Increase in “thinking critically” about the process of education
The exposure to D2L Brightspace before the first enrollment has identified students who may struggle with the technology and have been further assisted
Accrediting bodies have learned of the process and acknowledged its value.Slide12
Looking Forward
Vision For the Future~
Continuing with required orientation
Added additional module with Career Services
Would love to get ideas on other modules too!Slide13
