I Swear!

James 5:12

A study of the Epistle of JamesSlide2

The Spiritually Mature speak truthfully and live with integrity.

Spiritual Life Principle:Slide3

They have no need to utter oaths.

Swearing & Oaths:

done out of frustration and angst

done to affirm a truth or declare something.

Lev. 19:12

, “Don’t

swear falsely by the Name of the LORD and so profane the name of your God: I

am the LORD.”Slide4

They have no need to utter oaths.

Philo: Would you ask a good friend to testify to a lie? Why then invoke God to?

The Spiritually Mature do not need to “prop up” their words because they are confident in their standing.Slide5

Their Word is their bond.

1801 Maritime brokers motto: “Dictum Meum Pactum,” My word is my bond.

Simple honesty = A clear conscience.

YET, Swearing & Oaths is not forbidden:

Romans 1:9, “God is my witness…”Slide6

Their Word is their bond.

A Clear Conscience is King. At least 32 times in the NT alone the idea of keeping a clear conscience is presented. For the Apostles it was paramount: 2 Cor. 1:12; 1 Tim. 1:5; 1 Peter 3:16.

The Spiritually Mature person seeks to live, love and serve from a clear conscience.Slide7

They live with humility before God.

Micah 6:8, “He has shown you, O man, what is good and what does the Lord require of you, but to do justice and to love kindness and to walk humbly with your God.”Slide8

They live with humility before God.

The Spiritually Mature understand that walking in integrity means walking in humility with God.

Or it means facing

God’s condemnation.

Colossians 3:9, “Do not lie to one another, seeing that you have put off the old man with his deeds.”Slide9
