4. MECAR ReplacementPhased replacement suggestedPhase 1 – Replace the five old/slow CPU boards with one new/fast CPU board. Then rewrite the software, porting the assembly code to C/C++. The goal will be transparency (i.e. only MECAR will be modified).Phase 2 – Replace the rest of the MECAR hardware, either with one for one new hardware or with redesigned hardware with new/different functionality.Phase 3 – Make changes to or replace the I2 console application to take advantage of the new maintainability/extensibility gained by Phase 1 and the new capabilities gained by Phase 2.

MECAR ReplacementPhase 1 ProgressDecided on the scope of the MECAR board changesResearched and acquired the new CPU boards: Emerson MVME-5500Completed the porting and testing of 6250 lines of assembly code, which ran on 5 CPU boards, into 3550 lines of C code running on 1 CPU board.Debugged/Tested the complete functionality of MECAR against the built-in EmulatorCode which ran at 90% CPU utilization on the 5 old CPU boards now runs at 25% CPU utilization on one new CPU boardThe MECAR development crate has been moved out to MI-60N and hooked up as the Operational MECAR where additional tests are now occurring.
