Built in 1919, by Andrew Barclay, (B/N 1543) Kilmarnock, Scotland; Pozieres was one of a group of locomotives acquired by BHP for operations in and around the smelters at Port Pirie. The locomotive is named after a WW1 battlefield where the ANZACs fought in 1916.

Pozieres was preserved after it was retired by BHP and transferred to the Puffing Billy Preservation Society Museum at Menzies Creek in 1966.

In 2009, three locomotives were released by PB from the Museum to The Bellarine Railway including Pozieres and these locomotives arrived at Queenscliff 6 September 2009 and the following illustrates the restoration that followed:

Restoration of Pozieres commenced in early 2010 and it was moved to the Queenscliff Workshop 23 Feb 2010.

Restoration included a full strip down of the locomotive, removal of tanks, cab, wheels, and all underframe gear.

Both pistons were broken and were renewed.

The wheels were machined to a new flange profile and axles were tested

Boiler was inspected, numerous stays replaced plus patches in the throat plate.

Springs and running gear were overhauled

The steam brake was replaced with a No4 brake and Westinghouse C type air compressor fitted

Locomotive was fitted with a turbo generator and full lighting

Tanks and coal bunker were heavily rebuilt.

Cab was rebuilt including a varnished timber ceiling

Hydrostatic lubricator installed, as well as lubrication centralisation between the frames.

Locomotive was cosmetically overhauled

Pozieres underwent a hydro-test and was then steamed, to the satisfaction of the Boiler Inspector in July 2011. It moved under its own steam in August 2011 and after testing and trials was accredited for passenger operations by Public Transport Victoria in October 2011. Pozieres officially entered service on 29 October 2011 in a celebration shared with the members of the Puffing Billy Preservation Society and Museum.

Since then Pozieres has travelled approx. 7000 kilometres without incident on The Bellarine Railway, and is a proud addition to the societies fleet of 13 steam locomotives.Slide3

Pozieres is a fine representative of a typical British Industrial locomotive, with an historic significance to the Anzac tradition. The locomotive served BHP for many years and will continue to thrill future generations in its new operational home on
