Setting
Urgent care centers provide a walk-in, extended-hour access to adults and children for acute illness and injury
care
The
cost of care in an urgent care center is comparable to a primary care visit and less than an emergency room
visit
Common conditions treated include fevers, upper respiratory infections, minor infections, sprains and strains, minor broken bones, lacerations, contusion, and back pain. Urgent care centers also can treat factures and can provide IV
fluids
This type of setting typical will have physicians, physician assistants, nurses, nurse practitioners, medical assistants, and radiology technicians on the staff team. On the site most facilities will have x-ray and lab processing. Slide3
Accreditation
If a facility has accreditation that is telling the world that their urgent care facility practices with excellence and has met Joint Commission standards for quality and safety
.
Accreditation will enhance the appeal of the urgent care center to
payors
and employers and attracts the best providers to practice at the
center.
The standards for accreditation is based on the Joint Commission’s Ambulatory Care Standards but customized for urgent care settings.Slide4

Certification
Payers are recognizing this certified program and accepting it in lieu of their own credentialing
process.
When
applying for certification there is specific criteria that must be met. This criteria includes, the facility much accept and advertise that walk-in patients of all ages and accepted, particular services must be available during all posted hours of operations such as X-ray on site and phlebotomy services, minimum hours of operation, facility must have a physician designated as Medical Director for the facility who is responsible for overall clinical quality, and the facility must provide clinical care and perform business activities in an ethical manner.
Urgent care facilities with the urgent care certification designation have to meet three
requirements:
Mark of distinction
Educate the community and stakeholders and eliminate confusion with other kinds of providers
Tool for negotiation
Provide a national benchmark for discussing higher fee
schedules
An edge in marketing
Facility must clearly and effectively describe the levels of serviceSlide6
