What is mumps? Mumps is a contagious disease caused by a virus that can cause swelling and soreness of the salivary glands (the cheek and jaw area) along with fever. What are the symptoms of mumps? Mumps usually causes swelling of the glands under the ears or jaw (called ‘parotitis’). Other symptomsinclude fever, headache, general aches and muscle pains. Symptoms can last for 7 to 10 days.
