Miya Fowlercombines her major in African American Studieswith Miya Fowler Miya Fowlercombines her major in African American Studieswith work in Political Science, and she has done excellent academic work across the board. I can personally attest to the quality of her writing in literature classes. In addition to her excellence in the classroom Miya has been a leader on campus extra-curricularly too. For example, she was responsible for establishing the Kuumba Drum and Dance Community organization here at CofC, an organization created to bring knowledge and appreciation of West African drum and dance to the College of Charleston campus, as well as nurture the spirit of creativity in CofC students, and to continue developing the link between CofC and the wider Charleston community. They were invited to perform this past year at the Association for the Study of the Worldwide African Diaspora (ASWAD) conference. Additionally, Miya volunteered with the Girls Rock After School Program where she was the choreographer for a new drum and dance company called Stono Revival. Upon graduation, Miya plans to remain in Charleston and continue providing her talents and energies to the Girls Rock After School Program, specifically working with the Stono Revival Dance Company.
