1. Luca LanteroCIMEAFrom joint programmes to the European Education Area: European degrees and microcredentials

2. Over the past two decades…«the Erasmus+ programme has created and cemented links between the European Education Area and the rest of the world»«Each year, Europe’s universities exchange some 50,000 students and staff with universities in other parts of the world» «International partnerships have facilitated the development of innovative curricula and joint degrees, fostered joint research and innovation projects» «Today’s 130 Erasmus Mundus Joint Master Degree programmes provide over 2,500 EU-funded scholarships per year for students worldwide to study an integrated master programme at two or more European universities» [Communication from the European Commission on achieving the European Education Area by 2025]We have learned how to cooperate, we have innovated our programmes, we have created interconnections among institutions and scholars, we have faced challanges on a global scale.

3. Erasmus Mundus and joint programmesDouble, multiple and joint degrees awarded to our students are «valid» only in some national contexts (2, 3, 4, etc.), but not in all the Member States.WHY?«The Union shall contribute to the development of quality education by encouraging cooperation between Member States and, if necessary, by supporting and supplementing their action, while fully respecting the responsibility of the Member States for the content of teaching and the organisation of education systems and their cultural and linguistic diversity».[Article 165 - Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union]SUPPORTING COMPETENCEEU policy in the fields of education and training is designed to support action at the level of Member States – who remain responsible for these competence areas!

4. «European» degrees?«The Commission will also examine together with the Member States and stakeholders the development of a European Degree». [Communication from the European Commission on achieving the European Education Area by 2025]Not only a label = see the experience of Doctor Europaeus and EMJMDA new legislative approach is needed at national (or European?) level to introduce new typology of qualification «automatically» accepted (not recognised, this concept means another time an evalutation procedure) as an official qualification in our national contexts.Role of European Universities Initiative

5. «European» Micro-credentials?«A micro-credential is a small volume of learning certified by a credential». [MicroBOL Desk Research - Sept 2020]From European degrees to European micro-credentials?A NEW APPROACHFrom a formal recognition of full degrees to an automatic «acceptance» of competences, abilities and skills (learning outcomes) certified by higher education institutions working in a common academic field/discipline/framework (European Universities Initiative).
