Who comes to the SICU?

People who are recovering from emergency surgery after being admitted to the hospital after a serious injury or have fallen seriously ill in a short time.

Structure of the SICU

2 rooms per nurse

Information desk at each pod

Computer between each room

3 pods in total at SICU

What do patient rooms look like?

Bed is diagonal in the room and hooked up to a tower in the back corner of the room

Medical supply station in front corner of room

Sink with toilet underneath is opposite to the tower

Privacy curtain covering the sliding glass door

How do people communicate in the SICU?

Written: computer/charting, notes, tube

Oral: shift change reports

Making sure patients are comfortable

Seeing postmortem care and going to the morgue

Watching N-G tube be put in a unwilling patient

What was the most surprising thing?

ow much charting was done for each patient

How families were not very helpful

What was the most difficult part of the job?

Charting!

Talking to patient’s families

Would you ever go back?

Yes! I absolutely loved the SICU because of the intense situations and the lack of communication that had to be done with the patient because they were sedated.

What was your favorite job in the SICU?

Nurse! They were the most interactive with the progress of the patient’s recovery.

Who would you like to mentor next time?

Next time I would like to mentor a surgeon because I realized that I can handle “gory” situations.
