Riot police called in after Bonfire Night descends into violence and chaosPolice were forced to quell a large-scale Bonfire Night disturbance involving a group of youths in Leeds last night. Police say they were called to investigate reports of disorder and anti-social behaviour in the Harehills Road area of the city around 8.20pm. They said groups of youths were hurling fireworks and other missiles, while also setting fire to rubbish bins. With a police helicopter called in to assist, several arrests were made as the crowd dispersed. Chief Superintendent Damien Miller said: ‘In conjunction with our partner agencies, we have prepared for all possible eventualities over the bonfire period.‘We made it clear from the outset that any instances of disorder or antisocial behaviour would not be tolerated and we were able to quickly respond. ‘Those individuals that engage in such behaviour are within the minority and do not represent the wider community. ‘We will continue to provide reassurance in the local area with high visibility patrols.’ A number of people have been arrested and investigations were continuing to find anyone else who may have been involved. Police said in a statement: ‘No-one was reported to have been injured, however police vehicles were damaged.’West Yorkshire Police said the eight had been arrested on suspicion of violent disorder, seven had been released on bail, one is in custody and two others were facing further interviews about the night's events.The force had previously said offenders were "naive to think there will not be consequences".

13. Dear Sir/ MadamImagine a world where pets and the elderly don’t suffer for up to two weeks every November; a world that’s safer ; a world that’s quieter. I am writing this letter to kindly ask you, my local council, to consider banning the celebration of Bonfire Night in Wakefield and the five towns as I consider it to be a real danger to the general public and unless stopped will continue to cause widespread chaos in our normally peaceful and respected community. Firstly as a mother and pet owner I speak from experience at the disruption that fireworks cause on Bonfire Night. Due to the sale of fireworks building up to bonfire night the celebrations often last weeks with the loud displays lasting into the early hours of the morning. This causes unfair stress both to animals and children who suffer anxiety and disturbed sleep from the constant noise. The RSPCA states that they receive a 45% increase in calls for stray and missing animals during November caused by pets attempting to escape from the noise. Is this really fair?Secondly the sale of illegal fireworks is a major concern in small communities. Fireworks are already dangerous, causing the ambulance service to receive a 64% increase in 999 emergency calls linked to firework related accidents. According to figures from the NHS, there were almost 2,000 occasions of people going to A&E linked to fireworks in 2018.And more than 35,000 people sought advice from the NHS.uk website on how to treat burns and scalds. As a parent I fear that my child may be at risk from untrained individuals who think it funny to treat fireworks as a joke or prank. Fireworks should be a time to celebrate and enjoy the colorful displays, not stay in to avoid the danger that irresponsible individual can cause.Finally the law states that fireworks must not be set off between 11pm and 7am, except for Bonfire Night, when the cut off is midnight. Currently this rule is not being enforced as in my local area there have been fireworks going off until 3am, disturbing the sleep of my one year old little boy. This is hardly fair to children or elderly who are easily frightened by the loud noises. With so many fireworks going off it is hard for these people to sleep and rest, don’t you think? So imagine a world where Bonfire Night is not synonymous with the fear of danger, where it can be enjoyed in beautiful safe environment and there are no injuries caused by the irresponsible sale of illegal fireworks. You can make that happen. How I hear you ask? Ban Bonfire Night for good. Yours faithfullyWAGOLLTask: What is interesting and effective about this student response?
