Creative grammar – ways to improve sentences
1. absolute- add a noun + an ing word (participle) to the beginning or end of a sentence. Feet stomping, ears flapping, the elephant attacked the lions. Slide6Slide7
Appositive-
This is that info that’s dropped into the sentence. It’s set off by commas. Appositives give the sentence a second perspective. The elephant, an angry 1,200 pound beast, charged the lions. Slide8Slide9
Participle
Words ending in ing are participles. They generally begin as verbs, but can be used as other parts of speech. Add a participle to the beginning of a sentence to increase drama. (it is set off with a comma)Roaring a loud warning screech, the elephant charged the lions. Slide10Slide11
Adjectives out of order
Generally adjectives go before nouns, but to add emphasis, place after nouns and set off with commas. The elephant, monstrous and fierce, charged the lions. Slide12Slide13
