Parthapratim (Pat) Basu Dr. Parthapratim (Pat) Basu serves as t he Chief Public Health Veterinarian (CPHV) for the Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS), U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) . As the CPHV, Dr. Basu p rovide s advice to the FSIS Administrator, the Under Secretary for Food Safety, and Secretary of Agriculture on international meat and poultry food safety control and related public health issues . Dr. Basu serve s as the lead resource for FSIS and its partners, in domestic and international issues related to veterinary medicine, including zoonoses, antimicrobial resistance and other public health and "One Health" - related activities, including zoonoses and identif ication and mitig ation of antim icrobial resistance . Dr. Basu also serve s as the Senior Leader for Chemistry, Toxicology, and Related Sciences in the Office of Public Health & Science (OPHS) in FSIS. In this role, Dr. Basu p rovide s guidance relating to critical matters of public health and food safety that affect the mission of FSIS and OPHS, especially on such issues as drug residues, hormones, pesticides, and environmental contaminants in meat , poultry and egg products. Dr. Basu's career in FSIS spans over 34 years with extensive experience , beginning with field positions as a public heath veterinarian, before joining the headquarters' staff and management positions where he has provid ed leadership in developing, coordinating and integrating various activities related to food safety and public he alth in both the national and international are n a . Dr. Basu currently also serves as the U . S . Alternate Delegate to the Codex Committee on Pesticide Residues . He has previously served in a similar position with the Codex Committee of Veterinary Drug Residue in Food and has assisted the Codex Committee on Food Labeling with establishing the U . S . st andards i n the labeling for biotechnology - derived foods. Dr. Basu received his undergraduate education from Cambridge University, England , his d octor 's degree in Veterinary Medicine from Calcutta University , India , and a master's degree in Pharmacology and Toxicology from Ohio State University. He has received training and certification in epidemiology from the C enters for Disease Control and Prevention in Atla nta .
