Presentation Transcript

1. How to find the Number of procedures performed under Medicare for specific CPT codesSummer 2021

2. Getting StartedSuppose I want to find out how many bone marrow biopsies are performed under Medicare in a specific year. I know the CPT code for a bone marrow biopsy is 38221.Navigate to the CMS Website: https://data.cms.gov/Scroll down on the home page to Medicare and click “Go”

3. Selecting the Category for the ProcedureNext, click on the category under which your procedure falls. In this case, bone marrow biopsy falls under outpatient procedure, so we select that category.

4. Selecting the right Data SetScroll through the file types and select the data type that is most applicable to the data you are looking for. In this example, I want to see the total number of all bone marrow biopsies performed under Medicare in a given year. For this, I am going to choose “National Summary of Outpatient Hospital Charge Data by APC and primary HCPCS, CY2018”

5. Accessing the DataNext, click on “View Data”This will take you to a large table which houses all of the data for this data type. You will want to narrow your search by applying a filter.

6. Filtering the Data for the Desired ProcedureIn the Filter dropdown, click on “Add a New Filter Condition”Use the dropdown to add a filter for the desired HCPCS code to search. We will search the HCPCS code for bone marrow biopsy: 38221.With this filter applied, your search should be narrowed to just the desired procedure.

7. Calculating the total number of proceduresThe total number of procedures billed for that CPT code will be located in the “Beneficiaries” column. Since we are looking for any APC type of bone marrow biopsy procedure, our total will be the sum of the two rows: 13,005 + 183 = 13,188 bone marrow biopsy procedures performed under Medicare in CY2018.
