Spade sets an appointment to meet with Mr.
Gutman.Iva Archer arrives and confesses to Sam that it was she who told the police to go to Sam’s apartment. She also reveals that Phil Archer (Miles’ brother) has been talking to the police and is upset with Sam as well.
Sam tells Iva to go see Sid Wise before the police come to see her.
Spade goes to the Alexandria hotel and we find out that the tail is working for Gutman.Spade and Gutman speak about the bird. Gutman is trying to “feel” out Spade as to what he knows and who Spade may be aligned with (Brigid/Cario)Spade lies to Gutman and tells him that Cairo has offered 10,000 dollars for the bird.Gutman refuses to share any more information with Spade which angers Spade and causes him to leave.

The tail – we find out that he is actually working for Casper Gutman and he still doesn’t like SpadeCasper Gutman – he proves to be a worthy adversary for Spade but he is very interested in the bird.
