At the base of Kaiti Hill at Kaiti Beach, Captain Cook first set foot on New Zealand soil back in October 1769.
In 1969, this statue
was erected to commemorate the bicentenary of Cook’s visit. In fact it is an ‘imposter'. It is a bronze casting of a marble statue imported from
Italy
by Captain Cook Breweries from Auckland and is not a likeness of Cook.
