When and Where Began on February 21, 1916 and ended on December 18, 1916. Longest battle of WWI Took place on the Western Front between the German and French armies, on the hills of Verdun-sur-Meuse in north-eastern France The Germans Fifth Army attacked the defenses of the Fort of Verdun and the French Second Army on the river bank of Meuse

Erich Von Falkenhayn German strategist and commander Graduated from Kriegsakademie (war college) Rose to be a Minister of War Involved with the wars in the east and west Decided to take Verdun, a French Historic fortress Resigned after the battle due to a stalemate

Philippe Pétain Attended prestigious military academy at Saint Cyr Commander of the Second Army Nicknamed “the Victor of Verdun” Appointed Marshal Involved with negotiations with the Germans during WWII

Strategy-Germany Erich Von Falkenhayn = German War General Intended to cause casualties instead of taking land. “Bleed France White” Began on February 21 with a massive artillery attacks Took advantage of the weak republican system of France Used the German Army’s size over the French Army’s.

Strategy-France Philippe Pétain = General of the French Forces One road to enter Verdun from the outside The French army was able to travel up this road carrying thousands of troops This road, “Sacred Way”, helped the French successfully defend against the Germans

Impact and Significance In a way a victory for France because the Germans were stopped from reaching Verdun Heavy Casualties, each side lost about 400K men (both sides started with about 1.2 million troops) One of the reasons the British started the Battle of the Somme (help take pressure off heavily drained French) French and German Armies significantly weakened
