2. What is DANALAC Lactose Free?DANALAC Lactose Free infant formula is used for babies who are lactose intolerant.DANALAC Lactose Free infant formula is a milk-based formula designed for the dietary management of babies with lactose intolerance while providing complete nutrition which is important for proper development in babies from the first months of life. Must be used under medical supervision.NOTE: Not suitable for babies with galactosemia (rare genetic metabolic disorder that affects an individual's ability to metabolize the sugar galactose properly).

3. What is Lactose Intolerance?Lactose is a sugar found naturally in milk and most other dairy products. It is form by two different smaller sugars joined by a chemical bound. The intolerance occurs when the body is unable to produce enough lactase, the digestive enzyme produced in the gut that breaks down the chemical bound among the two parts of lactose.

4. Causes of Lactose IntoleranceThere are three main causes for lactose intolerance:Lactose intolerance may also occur in babies born prematurely because their small intestine is not developed enough at birth. It usually improves as babies get older.Primary – when natural lactase production decreases in response to a decreased intake of dairy products in the diet. This doesn’t usually occur before adulthood.Secondary – a temporary intolerance that is the result of gut damage(stomach bug or infection, coeliac disease or a long course of antibiotics, for example).Congenital – an extremely rare, genetic form of the condition where babies are born without, or with very low amounts of, lactase.

5. Symptoms of Lactose IntoleranceCommon symptoms of lactose intolerance include: Stomach pain Diarrhea Bloated stomach Excessive windThese symptoms usually occur within 1–3 hours after the lactose containing food has been consumed, because not digested lactose is fermented by gut bacteria and it produces undesirable “waste” products.Symptoms of lactose intolerance can be similar to those of other conditions, making it hard to identify.

6. Lactose Intolerance TreatmentWhen lactose intolerance is suspected, parents may be advised to eliminate lactose from the baby’s diet under the guidance of a healthcare professional, who will provide advice about all the nutrients they need for healthy development. For babies from 0 to 12 months DANALAC Lactose Free is the solution to avoid lactose consumption ensuring, at the same time, that the baby receives all the nutrients needed. Identifying lactose intolerance early allows baby to feel well again and get the nutrients they need for this stage and all future growth.

8. DANALAC LF and NUTRITION FACTS Energy ContentDuring the first months of live of a baby, baby receive all their energy from breast milk or infant formula.Infant formula energy content should be the same that breastmilk. So, as an example, infant formula stage 1 must have an energy content of 60kcal - 70kcal per 100ml.

9. Carbohydrate ContentLactose is the major carbohydrate of milk, but to prepare DANALAC LF we take out all the lactose from the cow’s milk.To achieve the desired level of carbohydrate in infant milks, glucose syrup is to the lactose-free skimmed milk powder base. DANALAC LF does not contain lactose.DANALAC LF and NUTRITION FACTS

10. Proteins – General concepts Proteins are big molecules, composed of small bricks (amino acids ) united by chemical (peptide) bonds.Human body, through digestive process, breaks the peptide bonds of diet proteins, absorbs the different amino acids and builds its own proteins. The cleavage of peptide bonds is done by a enzyme named “peptidase”.Little babies, which have incomplete digestive systems, lack a lot of peptidase so simple proteins are easier to digest for them.DANALAC LF and NUTRITION FACTS However, human body needs to receive different kinds of proteins in the diet, because they have different amounts and quantity of amino acids.Furthermore, there are some amino acids, named essentials, that human body is unable to produce them and must be obtained from the diet, from different kind of proteins.

11. Protein Content – Whey:Casein (I)Whey protein and casein are the two major proteins of breastmilk.Casein is a big protein, with a high content of peptide bonds and a complex structure and takes time to be digest.DANALAC LF and NUTRITION FACTS Whey protein is a small protein with relatively few peptide bonds and a simple structure, and it is easier to digest for babies. So, we could though that the easiest way to ease baby's digestion at protein level would be use only whey protein for infant formula. But this is not true. We know that breastmilk, in the first months of baby’s life, is whey-dominant. DANALAC GOLD uses proportions of whey:casein 60:40 for babies aged 0-6 months; for children aged 6-12 months, the ratio of whey and casein is now equal, 50:50. And children 1 year of age and older, need around 40% whey and 60% casein.

12. Protein Content – Whey:Casein (II)The reason behind these ratios is that since casein is more difficult to digest, it takes longer to digest and requires more peptidase enzymes. As children grows up, their digestive system gradually matures with increasing peptidase enzymes, so they can digest more and more casein. There are more reasons why we use these ratios of whey/casein instead of using 100% whey protein. One of them is prevent children from getting hungry in a short period of time (casein produces a greater feeling of fullness).Another reason is to help children prepare for a more mature diets when they grow up. Adult diet (containing shrimp, meat, fish, milk…) has whey/casein ratio of 20/80, which occupied greatly by casein. So, it is necessary to gradually change whey/casein ratio to help children adapt to the normal daily diets. DANALAC LF and NUTRITION FACTS

13. Fat component of human milk is highly variable and changes with the duration of feed, stage of lactation and the dietary habits of the mother, providing babies with all the different kind of fat they would need.In order to recreate a fatty acid profile similar to breast milk, infant milks contain a mix of fatty acid sources. In DANALAC we use skimmed milk (to avoid fat’s cow milk, that is difficult to digest for babies) and a mixture of vegetal and animal (fish) oils to produce a profile of fat as similar as possible to breast milk.Fat ContentDANALAC LF and NUTRITION FACTS Fat is necessary for the body, not only as a source of energy but also as a component of our cells. All cells have an external layer of different types of fat and, some of them, as the nervous cells, has more than one layer.

14. Fat ContentAnother important thing to point out is that there are some kinds of fat, named essential fatty acids, that the human body can’t produce and must be provided by the diet, for example linoleic acid and linolenic acid.Fatty acids are very important in the development of brain, nervous system, retina and other parts of the body. DANALAC LF provides essentials fatty acids (linoleic acid and linolenic acid) in the best proportion to be properly absorbed and used by babies’ body.DANALAC LF and NUTRITION FACTS

15. Vitamins and MineralsVitamins and minerals are micronutrients, essential in the diet for growth, maintenance and functioning. DANALAC provides all vitamins and minerals that the baby needs for a proper development: calcium and phosphorus for the bones, vitamin D to help to absorb calcium properly, folic acid for nervous system development, vitamin A for the eyes…DANALAC LF levels of vitamins and minerals are within the recommended range for each micronutrient and each development stage. DANALAC LF and NUTRITION FACTS

16. NUCLEOTIDESNucleotides are small molecules that take part in the formation of all the cells and other structures in the body. Although nucleotides can be synthetized by the body, in moments of high demand (moments of fast growing or when it is necessary to activate the immune system), it is necessary to obtain more from the diet.Breastmilk is a source of nucleotides in variable amount. DANALAC complements the infant formulae with 5 different types of nucleotides that help improve children's resistance strength as well as helps them to have an enhanced immune system.DANALAC LF contains 5 types of nucleotides.
