Drawing Board, T-Square, 2H/5H Pencil, 60/30°, Compass Set-Square & Masking tape
Step 1: Set up and line out page as per specification
Step 2: Locate start point of parabola on the page
Step 3: Using the rectangle method, draw a rectangle using desired measurements. Note that measurements divisible by 5 are easy to work with.
Step 4: Draw a centre line down the middle of the rectangle and note point V (Vertex) at the top end.
Step 5: Divide the side, for example, into 5 equal parts. This can be done mathematically if convenient or by line division method if not.
Step 6: Divide half of the bottom into 5 equal parts also. Label all points, side and bottom, 1-5 as shown.
Step 7: Join all points on the side to point V at the top and join points directly up from the bottom to meet such lines to create points on the parabola curve. For example join 1(side) to V, join 1(bottom) directly up to meet line 1V and thus giving us point 1 on the curve.Mirror all points to other side to complete the parabola.TIP: Always look at the point ahead of you when drawing the curve, the pencil will follow if you trust it!
HISTORY LINK
The
Greek mathematician Menaechmus
(Mid 4
th
Century B.C.) is credited with discovering that the parabola is a conic section. A parabola is an infinite curve!
GEOGRAPHY LINK
The Gateway Arch is a 192 metre (m) arch in the City of St. Louis in the U.S.A. It has an iconic parabolic shape and is made from stainless steel. Its is the tallest manmade arch structure in the western hemisphere
MATHS LINK
When generating a parabola curve any number of points can be used. In this case we use 5 equally spaced points on the side and 5 equally spaced points on one half of the bottom of the rectangle. The side/bottom lines can be divided graphically or mathematically. For the latter, for example, the 200mm (side) ÷ 5 = 40mm spacing and 60mm (half-bottom) ÷ 5 = 12mm spacing.
