Reseach on Emotional Demand Model Based Multimedia Courseware Design Technology

Abstract

Multimedia courseware has been widely applied in classroom teaching. However, currently the majority of multimedia courseware are designed from viewpoint of teacher’s own teaching, seldom considering the students’ emotional demand. This research took the consideration of students’ emotional demand as a basis, to determine the key design elements in designing multimedia couseware and build an emotional experiencing evaluation scale for multimedia courseware. Then, the partial least squares method was adopted to establish the relation model between emotional experience word pair and key design elements. Finally, a multimedia courseware design with optimum design elements combination was ascertained to meet the students’ emotional demand, which serves a new thought for the optimization design of multimedia courseware.

Text

Multimedia courseware is a kind of computer software integrating words, symbols, graphics, images, animation, sound and video, which is capable of reflecting some certain teaching content and strategies, under the guidance of certain learning theory and according to the designed teaching objectives[1]. Multimedia courseware must be based on the requirements of teaching syllabus and the teaching needs, go throughrigorous teaching design, and finally produced to be a courseware with hyper text structure that can be displayed in a variety of medias. As multimedia courseware has been widely used in classroom teaching by lots of universities, how to design a multimedia courseware satisfying the needs of college students has attracted the attention of teachers and scholars.Nevertheless, recent multimedia courseware design approaches mostly starts from a viewpoint of teaching theory and technology [2, 3], seldom considering the students’ own needs, particularly emotional needs. Benjamin Bloom, a well-known American educator, indicated that emotional experience is a significant variable having impact on a student in his/her study. The effective realization of emotional objectives in teaching has also become a focus of attention in educational circles [4]. Only when multimedia courseware is able to satisfy the emotional needs of college students, can its effect of classroom teaching be better played. But how to acquire the emotional needs of college students and convert these into design elements of multimedia courseware has become a focus and difficulty in making multimedia courseware.First, number the 40 multimedia coursewares and send them to the subjects. The subjects under survey are 30 college students, including 15 male and 15 female. Second, ask the subjects to classify the similar multimedia coursewares into one group, and the specific grouping number will be decided by themselves. Finally, the classification results will form a classification statistic matrix(40×40). Then we use SPSS18.0 software to implement multidimensional scale analysis and get the space coordinates of above 40 multimedia coursewares. After that, the clustering method is employed to choose 12 multimedia coursewares as representative courseware for experimental research. The experimental purposed representative multimedia courseware example is as shown in Fig.1.Select 64 college students(including 32 male and 32 female) who have received more than three lessons given in form of multimedia courseware as the subjects. They should be able to watch normally and without color blindness.Play 12 representative multimedia coursewares to the subjects, and ask them to evaluate their feeling in the emotional experience scale after watching for 1 minutes. After 5 minutes rest from the first evaluation, proceed to next multimedia courseware until all 12 coursewares have been evaluated. Then the experiment ends.

On basis of a research method for emotional demand model based multimedia courseware design, through determining key design elements of multimedia courseware design, this research built a relation model among the emotional experience evaluation scale of multimedia courseware, the emotional experience word pairs and key design elements, and realized an optimal design elements combination of multimedia courseware design that can meet the emotional demand of college students, so as to improve the multimedia courseware design and production level. The research indicates that the application of model with optimized design can significantly improve the production quality and level of multimedia courseware and contribute to increasing the multimedia teaching effect.
