Hawk RoostingBy Ted HughesSlide2
I sit in the
top of the wood, my eyes closed.
Inaction,
no falsifying dreamBetween my hooked head and hooked feet:Or in sleep rehearse perfect kills and eat.The convenience of the high trees! The air’s buoyancy and the sun’s rayAre of advantage to me;And the earth’s face upward for my inspection.
At the top as he is the most powerful & important
Has no time to daydream- needs to keep in the moment
Repetition of ‘hooked’ emphasises strength
As if they were designed specifically for him
He looks down at the earth as he flies- also he thinks he is in charge of the entire earthSlide3
My feet are
locked upon the rough bark.
It took the whole of Creation
To produce my foot, my each feather:Now I hold Creation in my footOr fly up, and revolve it all slowly –I kill where I please because it is all mine. There is no sophistry in my body:My manners are tearing off heads –
Shows his strength
He thinks he is the only important being
He sees himself in charge and above everything
Seems over confident and even deluded!
Sophistry = sophistication
He has no manners- does what he likes including killingSlide4
The
allotment of death.
For the one path of my flight is direct
Through the bones of the living. No arguments assert my right:The sun is behind me.Nothing has changed since I began. My eye has permitted no change.I am going to keep things like this.Allotment = when you are assigned something. He is saying he decided when others live or die
Image of hawk swooping down and grabbing prey- violent
He is more important than the sun, which gives us all life…
In charge of everything
He is in complete control and will decide everythingSlide5
