Chapter summary:
Climate:
North Sudan = hot, dry climate, South Sudan = tropical climate.
Climate is changing in Sudan since the 1970s.
The country is suffering from severe drought.
Desertification (the spreading of desert like conditions) is increasing especially in Sahel regions of the country
.
Population growth:
2/3 of the population live in/around the capital city Khartoum.
This causes overpopulation around the city area but under population in rural areas.
Overpopulation causes problems such as:
Food shortages
Demand for land
Soil erosion
Famine
Wars
Muslim Arabs in North v Black Christians in the South
Drought forced farmers to move south = increased tension
1983 Government passed Islamic laws that further angered Christians
= Civil war + new war in Darfur
