Slide1

Warm UP 9/22 (Silent)

1.  Cell = 80% water

   Liquid cell is in = 95% water

Will water move into or out of the cell?

2. Beaker = 50% water, 50% salt

    Dialysis Tube = 40% water, 60% salt

Will water move into the tube or out of the tube?

3. Beaker = 10% water, 90% sugar

    Egg = 10% water, 90% other molecules

Will water move into the egg or out of the egg?

4. Beaker = 90 % sugar

     Egg = 50% sugar

Will water move into the egg or out of the egg?Slide2

Reminders

Test in one week 9/29

Last day to make up work from 9/17 or before is 9/28 (MONDAY)

Cell Analogies are late, but it is better to be late then get a zero, please turn them in!

No reading quiz next week…but….I will give you a study guide on Thursday

Slide3

Direction of Osmosis

Hypotonic: Lower in concentration of solutes (higher in water)

Hypertonic: Higher in concentration of solutes (lower in water)

Isotonic: Equal in concentration of solutes (equal in water)Slide4

Back to our Messin

with Osmosis experiments

Think back to your experiments.

Answer the following questions:

What item and what liquid did you and your group use?

Which was hypertonic your liquid or your item? (or where they isotonic?)

Which was hypotonic your liquid or your item? (or where they isotonic?)

Where did water move, into or out of your item? Slide10

Cells and Tonicity

Turgor Pressure

: pressure that water molecules exert against a cell wall

Plasmolysis

: When cells shrink away from the cell walls

Cytolysis

: When cells burst
