Presentation Transcript

1. Material PropertiesHere we will learn some of the common properties of materials

2. States of matterMatter - the substance all things are made from can exist in 3 states.

3. Name three gasesName three liquidsName three solidsCan mater change its state? If so how?

4. ForcesTo understand material properties, we must first identify the forces that materials must withstand. CompressionTensionBendingShearTorsion

5. Forces acting on materials. StrengthStrength is the ability of a material to withstand forces of compression, tension, bending, torsion and shear.

6. Strenght of materialsCompressive StrengthIs the ability to withstand compressive force, the ability of a material to not get squashedTensile strength Is the maximum pulling or tensile stress a material can withstand before breaking.

7. Strenght of materialsBending StrengthIs the ability to withstand bending force. Torsional strength The ability to withstand a twisting force.

8. Strenght of materialsShear strength The ability to withstand shear force, it tends to cut the material.

9. Name items in the classroom/your home which have to withstand forces of:Compression…Tension….Bending….Torsion….Shear….

10. Common properties of materialsNote: A material can have more than one property

11. Properties of MaterialsHardnessThe ability of a material to resist abrasive wear, indentation and scratching. A diamond is a very hard material. Can you name another hard material?BrittlenessThe ability of a material to be easily fractured/shatter by an impact. Glass is a very brittle material. Can you name another brittle material?

12. Properties of MaterialsToughnessThe ability of a material to withstand blows or an impact.Black spiders silk is a very tough material. Can you name another tough material?DuctilityA material is said to be ductile when it can be permanently stretched, without fracture by a tensile force.Copper is a very ductile material. Can you name another ductile material?

13. Properties of MaterialsElasticityThe ability of a material to return to return to its original shape when freed from a force which was distorting it.Rubber is a very elastic material. Can you name another elastic material?MalleabilityThe material can be deformed by compression without cracking or rupturing. Gold is a very malleable material. Can you name another malleable material?

14. InsulatorA material which prevents the flow of electricity or heat through it. Cloth is a very good insulator. Can you name another material which insulates?Properties of MaterialsConductivityConductivity is the ability of a material to allow heat or electricity to flow through it. Stainless steel is a very conductive material. Can you name another conductive material?

15. Name items in the classroom/your home which have the following properties:DuctilityElasticityConductivityHardnessBrittlenessInsulatorMalleabilityToughness
