2. TasksUnderstand life in an earthquake zone and are familiar with the precautions and preparations required.Understand why and how engineers construct earthquake proof buildings.Make an earthquake proof structure using simple materials.Week 3 – Life in an earthquake zone, being prepared and earthquake proof structures.

3. On the next few slides, there are photographs of earthquakes in a classroom. These show how school classrooms have been devastated by earthquakes. Try to imagine what it would be like to go to school in an earthquake zone. Think about ….How would you feel about being in school and not being near your parents or loved ones? Would you feel anxious? Would you be able to concentrate? We need to remember, that people who live in earthquake zones have to learn to live with the possibility of an earthquake happening. Week 3 – Life in an earthquake zone, being prepared and earthquake proof structures.

4. Week 3 – Life in an earthquake zone, being prepared and earthquake proof structures.

5. Week 3 – Life in an earthquake zone, being prepared and earthquake proof structures.

6. Week 3 – Life in an earthquake zone, being prepared and earthquake proof structures.

7. On the next slide, you will see a map. This is a map showing The Ring of Fire. (We’ve looked at this when we covered the work on Volcanoes). This is an area where a large number of earthquakes and volcanic eruptions occur in the basin of the Pacific Ocean, in a 40,000 km (25,000 mile) horseshoe shape. It is associated with a nearly continuous series of oceanic trenches, volcanic arcs, and volcanic belts and/or plate movements. It has 452 volcanoes and is home to over 75% of the world's active and dormant volcanoes. Look closely at the map. Can you recognise any countries? Have they been to any of these places on holiday? Do you know anyone who lives near the Ring of Fire? Week 3 – Life in an earthquake zone, being prepared and earthquake proof structures.

8. Week 3 – Life in an earthquake zone, being prepared and earthquake proof structures.

9. If you want to find out more about oceanic trenches, volcanic arcs and belts etc… look on the following links.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Earthquake - Background information on earthquakes; http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oceanic_trench - Background information on oceanic trenches; http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Volcanic_arc - Background information on volcanic arcs; http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Volcanic_belt - Background information on volcanic belts. Now look on a globe or in an atlas to find the names of some of the countries in the Ring of Fire. Along the Ring of Fire, there are some developing countries with not a lot of money to spend on earthquake-proof buildings (Mexico, Haiti), and also some areas we may not associate with being part of a major earthquake zone (New Zealand, California and the west coast of America). When people live in these areas, they know they need to be prepared for a major earthquake. They practise earthquake drills and make sure their houses are as safe as possible.Week 3 – Life in an earthquake zone, being prepared and earthquake proof structures.

10. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GSDmqLQmMN0&list=PLs1gMujRSBY2t7JB4VS-AymFwN-6Lvg20%20IHere are visual images to remind people what to do.Being preparedHere is a short video clip which would prepare you if you were ever in an earthquake zone during an earthquake. Week 3 – Life in an earthquake zone, being prepared and earthquake proof structures.

11. Look around the room you are in. Now think about your whole house and imagine what it would be like if your house was in an earthquake zone. What have you learnt about how to prepare for an earthquake? What would have to be stuck down or moved? How safe would you be in your home if an earthquake struck? Where would you drop to if an earthquake started? In a drill, you would have to drop quickly and calmly to the ground, climb under the table if possible or cover your head with your hands and hold on to something solid. Week 3 – Life in an earthquake zone, being prepared and earthquake proof structures.

12. Week 3 – Life in an earthquake zone, being prepared and earthquake proof structures. Look at the photographs below. These are images of houses that have not been built to withstand the seismic waves of an earthquake. An earthquake can cause much loss of life and millions of pounds worth of damage to cities. Seismic waves from earthquakes cause walls to crack, foundations to move and even entire buildings to crumble. Engineers strive to make buildings stronger to resist the forces of earthquakes

13. Week 3 – Life in an earthquake zone, being prepared and earthquake proof structures. Earthquake proof buildings are intended to bend and sway with the motion of earthquakes, instead of cracking and breaking under the pressure. Have you ever looked at a really tall building, such as a skyscraper? Does it appear fragile and unstable? Now look at the photographs below. These buildings are typical of earthquake proof buildings. They have cross-bracing that forms triangles in their design. They also typically have a large ‘footprint’, or base, and a tapered shape, decreasing in size as the building gets taller (or simply, smaller at the top).

14. Week 3 – Life in an earthquake zone, being prepared and earthquake proof structures. TASKCan you build an earthquake proof structure/building?Click on this link and scroll down to find out some more information. https://www.imaginationstationtoledo.org/educator/activities/can-you-build-an-earthquake-proof-buildingOn the next few slides are some instructions to help you make a structure using marshmallows and straws. Have fun!

18. Now draw your most earthquake resistant structure or take a photo of what you have made and send it to me on Class Dojo. Can you label the cross braces and shapes in your structure and explain why you think it withstood your jelly earthquake? Here is another video link of earthquakes you may want to watch, which makes me realise how lucky we are where we live.https://www.google.com/search?q=clip+of+the+aftermath+of+the+earthquake&rlz=1C1PRFE_enGB683GB685&oq=clip+of+the+aftermath+of+the+earthquake&aqs=chrome..69i57j33l4.2156j0j7&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8 Week 3 – Life in an earthquake zone, being prepared and earthquake proof structures.

19. Now check if you have completed your tasks for this week…Review…Understand life in an earthquake zone and are familiar with the precautions and preparations required. (Can you remember what to do if you were in a building during an earthquake?)Understand why and how engineers construct earthquake proof buildings. (Can you explain how to make an earthquake proof structure to somebody else?)Make an earthquake proof structure using simple materials. (Did you make a structure and did your structure withstand the jelly test?)REMEMBER to send me photos on Class Dojo to show me and your friends what you’ve achieved.
