Story time

On March 2, 1955,

a young black woman

, fed up with the daily injustices of Jim Crow segregation, refused to give her seat to a white woman on a segregated bus in Montgomery, Alabama

. The bus driver yelled at her to move, but she refused to stand up in order to protest the unequal treatment of whites and blacks.

She was arrested for refusing to give up her seat.

Who does this sound like?Slide3

If you said Rosa Parks…

You would be wrong!

This is the story of Claudette Colvin, a young woman who took the same action Rosa Parks would take nine months later.

Why don’t we remember Colvin?Slide4

What was the difference?

Colvin was a teenager who would later become

pregnant.

Parks was a respected member of the community and secretary of the Montgomery NAACP.
