Who Am I?

Frederick

Naftel

from Manchester, a city which has seen more

anti-semitic

incidents in the past few years than in London.

I have over 25 years’ experience in teaching at secondary schools and sixth form colleges.

I have an extensive knowledge of The Holocaust and have experienced prejudice in my own life.

I make it my duty to impart my family story and history to keep memories alive, at a time when

anti-semitism

has again reared its ugly head.Slide2

The Holocaust and Judaism Today

What is The Holocaust?

How and why did it happen?

How many Jews perished under the Nazis?

Which other minority groups were also subjected to prejudice and persecution?

What did it feel like to be constantly under threat?

How does it feel to lose all your privileges and freedom and become ostracised?Slide4

Why do we study The Holocaust today?

To show what happens when hate and prejudice become all-consuming.

To ensure it must never happen again.

Have lessons been learnt though?

Look at subsequent genocide in countries such as Rwanda, Darfur, Bosnia, Armenia, Cambodia and more recently in Syria and Iraq.

Looking at racism in general.Slide5

What does it mean to be Jewish today?

With

anti-semitism

on the rise again, do Jews feel safe?

Why has

anti-semitism

become more prevalent in society?

How do we educate people about what is right and what is wrong?

Why have Jews been persecuted throughout history?Slide6
