A Brief History
In 1890 the University was founded as Woolwich Polytechnic.
In 1892 the school was awarded its first CGLI Certificate.
In 1894 part – time day courses were added in association with the Ministry of War.
In 1907 it became an Institute with Recognised Teachers.
The first sandwich courses in the UK took place here in 1935 in association with the Ministry of War.
In 1969 the University amalgamated with parts of the Hammersmith College of Arts and Buildings. Slide4
A Brief History
In 1970 the
Universtiy
was established, it was originally called Thames
Poytechnic
.
Dartford college was incorporated with the University in 1976.
Avery college was then incorporated in 1985 along with Garnett college in 1987.
In 1988 science courses were incorporated into the University from Goldsmith college and the city of London Polytechnic.
In 1992 the it was renamed as Greenwich
Universtiy
.
In 1993 Thames College of Health Care Studies was incorporated, along with Natural Resource Institute in 1996.
In 1999 the Maritime Greenwich Campus was established. Slide5

It is located in South East London.
Set in 86 acres of Parkland housing roughly 6000 students.
This building dates back to 1890 and was built by Colonel John North as part of his home.
It became a Teacher Training College and was then incorporated by the University in 1985.
There is a vast amount of facilities available, some examples are:

Studio, up to date laboratory and computing equipment, university bookshop,
library,general
shop, launderette, parking, tennis court and a rugby pitch.

Maritime Greenwich Campus
It is located on the banks of the Thames River and was established as Greenwich Hospital in 1684.
It was built on the site of the Palace of Placentia where Henry VIII, Queen Mary and Queen Elizabeth were born.
It became the Royal Naval College in in 1873 and it trained soldiers up until 1998 when it was amalgamated with the Greenwich University.
It houses more then 8000 students.
The college has a wide range of facilities available, some examples are:
Job shop, coffee shop, computers, library and a TV studio.
