In the book, The Road to Freedom by Lesa Cline-Ransome, Emma was born into slavery with her Mama and Papa. With her Papa sold in a auction block, Emma and her Mama realize that it is better to run away, as Emma or her Mama could be sold, too. Emma and her Mama have a rough journey to the North. Slave catchers are close to catching them, but with the help of others, Emma and her Mama make it to the North.
