ROLE OF THE COLORECTAL MACMILLAN NURSE SPECIALISTGail CoulterJulie SavageWhat is a Colorectal Macmillan Nurse Specialist?An experienced nurse trained in cancer care and colorectal surgery, who works within the Wirral Colorectal Team, specialising in the care of inpatients and outpatients with suspected or confirmed bowel cancerOur aim is to support patients/carers through their cancer experience Actively case manages the patients through diagnostic and treatment processes at WUTH and other hospitalsWorks closely with staff within WUTH, the community setting, as well as other hospitals, which include University Hospital Aintree, Royal Liverpool University Hospital, Clatterbridge Cancer Centre and The Christie HospitalEmployed by WUTH but originally funded by Macmillan Cancer Support, a UK-wide charity supporting those affected by cancerHow many patients are referred?Approximately 250 new colorectal cancer patients are referred each year with a confirmed diagnosis of bowel cancerHow can we help patients?A diagnosis of cancer can be a frightening time, whatever emotions occur, it can be reassuring knowing that there is someone to listen and talk to Provide support to patients and families in a timely manner throughout their journey, identifying their main concerns and exploring how these might be addressedFacilitate case discussion at the weekly colorectal MDTAct as a point of contactProvide clear information to patients/carers, throughout their cancer experienceSignposting and working in collaboration with other agencies including Maggie’s Centre, Macmillan Cancer Information Centre, CAB, DWPAct as a link for patients/carers between health care professionals within the community, WUTH and other hospitals How can we be contacted?Gail Coulter & Julie Savage Tel: 0151 604 7189Or 0151 678 5111 Ext 2507
