Aged Care Funding Instrument (ACFI) replaced the Resident Classification Scale (RCS) in March 2008Determines how much government funding an aged care facility is givenBased on facilities’ appraisal of residents’ care needsOverviewDesigned to:Better match funding to residents’ care needsReduce paperwork to justify fundingAchieve more agreement between aged care staff & departmental review officers

How ACFI worksDiagnostic information about mental & behavioural disorders & other medical conditions is collectedACFI has 12 care need questions, rated as A, B, C or DScores are given & used to categorise resident’s care needs as eitherlow, medium or highacross 3 domains:Activities of Daily LivingBehaviourComplex Health Care

Diagnostic QuestionsACFI diagnoses based on:Mental & behavioural questionsACFI appraisal evidence required might include disorders/diagnosis checklists, source materials checklists, copies of source materials eg, ACCR, GP comprehensive medical assessment, other medical practitioner assessmentsMedical questions, requiring a list of medical conditionsThis provides a minimum data set & supports usual care needs ratings
