Write a paragraph that demonstrates your understanding and development for each of the 5 attributes of a 21st Century Learner.

Learner

A Learner is a person who is engaged, resilient and seeks to understand through:Literacy, Numeracy and Subject Competencies Information, Media, and Technology LiteracySelf-Direction, Work Ethic and AccountabilityHealthy LifestyleFinancial Literacye.g. Academic achievement, earning a great grade on an assignment or in a class, created a project you were proud of, etc.Slide3

Learner

During my Grade 10 and 11 years (2011-2012, 2012-2013) at Kelowna Secondary School, I have won the Top Academic award. This award is given to the KSS student with the greatest overall academic achievement in the core high school subjects required to graduate from School District 23.This demonstrates that I am a learner because this award requires a person to be well balanced between the humanities, language arts, sciences, and mathematics as well as being very successful in each. This range of ability shows that I am well organized, self-motivated, literate, and competent in every subject that I study. My responsible and hard-working natures were the primary factors in this achievement because of the extra effort that I exerted in order to push myself above my peers.Slide4

Thinker

A Thinker is one who analyzes, makes connections, inferences, asks questions, and transfers knowledge through:Critical Thinking and Problem SolvingOpen Mindedness and ReflectionFlexibility and Adaptabilitye.g. changed your opinion about an issue, were flexible in your thinking, solved a problem or an issue, etc.Slide5

Thinker

Throughout my later scholastic career (2011-present) I have had very high academic achievement in Honours and Advanced Placement courses. The effort that I put into all of my Honours and AP classes and coursework rewarded me with a greater degree of depth in classroom discussion of topics and concepts and a greater degree of success on examinations and projects. Achieving this degree of success, both in terms of marks and the respect of my teachers, in Honours and AP courses is proof of a “thinker” attribute in that all of these courses have an intense focus on being able to not only memorize information and material, but to also be able to apply and extend what I am taught to new subjects and information. The English Honours/English AP program is a very good example of this, where I am constantly challenged to make connections within the writing of several authors and to interpret the statements of authors within their literary works. The sheer range of interpretations and connections that can exist within one class of about twenty students shows how important the ability to act like a “thinker” is in an

Innovator

An Innovator is one who sees possibilities and generates original ideas with value through:Curiosity and ImaginationCreativity, Design and PerformanceInitiative and Entrepreneurshipe.g. Created a project or a craft, came up with a business idea, started a new group or club, came up with a new trick, created a new digital project, etc.Slide7

Innovator

When I was in Grade 8, I won the 2010 Rotary Essay Writing Contest. My essay was judged by the adjudicators of the Rotary contest to be the best of the submissions for that year’s contest for middle school students. This event in particular demonstrates my aptitude as an “innovator” because of the reason that I was told that I won the contest. The guiding principle of the contest is to write an essay that addresses at least one of the four tenets of the Rotary International Organization. Therefore, in past, the winner of the contest has been the writer that has most successfully addressed as many of the tenets as possible. Almost immediately from when I began writing for the $250 winner’s prize, I knew that I could not write an essay where I was constantly addressing principles that were set down by people that I had never known and could not connect with. So, I decided to write to only one of the tenets, and even then I only made brief mention of which one I was writing to. I have always preferred for subtext to carry my connections and deeper meanings rather than for me to directly state my message. It is probably a bad habit I picked up from reading very mature novels ever since I was a child. When I was called with the news to attend the awards ceremony for the writing contest, I was ecstatic, but when I won, after having listened to the essays of my contemporaries, all I could feel was disbelief. They had followed the guidelines of the contest much more strictly that I had, but yet here I was, a hopeful future engineer standing above one of my friends who wanted to become a journalist and another who wants to be a fiction writer. After the ceremony had concluded, I asked the judges why I was chosen over people who were much more qualified by the dictates of the contest, and they told me that I won because I focused on what I was writing rather than what I was for. The simple difference that I ventured, perhaps precipitously, outside the realm of certainty with the contest is why I won, when all it was that I wanted to express my belief in the deficits of putting limits on creativity and writing.Slide8

Collaborator

A Collaborator is one who excels at working with others to create new understanding through:Appreciating DiversityEffective CommunicationInterdependenceRelationship Building e.g. played on a sports team, worked as part of a group, participated in link crew, etc.Slide9

Collaborator

Throughout my life, I have played in various musical groups, especially since I started middle school in 2008. I have had an appreciation for music and its creation instilled in me ever since early childhood when my parents made me take piano lessons. Participating in a band or choir of any kind is an exercise in patience, cooperation, and communication. In order to produce a cohesive and tonally correct sound, all of these characteristics must be in place. But in order to push the musicality of a group even further, there must be a unique makeup within the group itself in order to create a musical identity, or how a certain group makes music. Each group that I have been in, the balance and diversity has been different, and therefore each one is a fresh canvas to make new relationships. Ultimately, all of these things together are what prove this activity of being worthy of denoting me as a “collaborator.”Slide10

Contributor

A Contributor is a citizen who participates in the local and global community through:Finding, Following, and Sharing PassionsRespect, Empathy, and Kindness Integrity and Ethical BehaviourCivic and Environmental ResponsibilityEmbracing Diverse Cultures and Lifestylese.g. volunteering, Me to We Day, recycling/composting, Harmony Day celebrations, Anti-bullying day activities, etc.Slide11

Contributor

Ever since I was in the second grade, I have been volunteering in the Trinity Baptist Church Hospitality Center. I participated in this activity to facilitate new relationships, to learn to prepare food in a fully functioning restaurant-style kitchen, and to give me valuable experience when it comes to volunteering in general. Volunteering in a church hospitality center is an example of how I can be qualified as a “contributor” in that it forces me to put aside my own agendas and goals to simply serve others in my community as they enjoy a calm and comfortable setting while simultaneously preparing food for the selfsame people. During my time there, I must work with other volunteers for a professional caterer in the community. I am exposed to many different people from many different walks of life, which has taught me to appreciate and respect diversity in all of its forms. Seeing many familiar faces has caused my relationships with them to strengthen, and likewise unfamiliar faces have gained my recognition and consequent friendship. Most importantly of all, working in this setting has made me realize how much humanity can share over a simple bowl of soup and a cup of coffee.
