The School: Washtenaw International High School ( WIHI ) is a 9 th - 12 th grade consortium public high school serving school districts in Washtenaw County, MI , including Ann Arbor, Chelsea, L incoln, Manchester, Milan, Saline, Whit more Lake, Ypsilanti and surrounding school districts . WIHI students participate in a rigorous International Baccalaureate curriculum. The International Baccalaureate Diploma Program : The International Baccalaureate program’s comprehensive courses , student - centered emphasis, exceptional academic standards and inquiry - based curriculum offer an exemplary education based on international standards. WIHI School Achievements and Recognition:  #1 in Washtenaw County for ACT/SAT & College Readiness Scores in 2014, 2015 , 2016 and 2017 ( all years WIHI has been eligible) ; # 2 in Michigan for 201 7 SAT & College Readiness Scores.  7 semi finalists and 6 Commended Students in the 2016 National M erit Scholarship Competition ( 1 3 percent of eligible WIHI students, compared to 3 percent nationwide)  More than 90 percent of students participate in extra - curricular activities, including interscholastic athletics; home - grown clubs like Diversity Alliance, Pan - African Student Union and Student Government; plus chapters of Model UN, NHS, HOSA, JSA and more!  Overall team champions at 2017 Muslim Interscholastic Tournament (Detroit)  2 nd Place at 201 7 Michigan Forensics Team Competition  Rewarded for academic excellen ce and caring/collabo rative culture with endowment of $1.5 million WIHI Exceptional Learner Scholarship. The county’s population is 344,000 people who are employed in a diverse array of medical, technological, manufacturing and educational fields . WIHI is a diverse and inclusive community with students representing a wide range of races, religions and socioeconomic backgrounds . Students speak more than 25 languages at home. No single race represents more than 52 percent of people in the school. 16 percent of WIHI seniors are identified as economically disadvantaged . Class of 2017 demographics: Caucasian : 52 % ; Asian: 29 % ; African - American: 13 % ; Hispanic: 4 % ; First - Generation College: 17 % ( approx . ) U nique Features of WIHI: WIHI Culture: The school provides a rigorous , student - centered, inquiry - based sequence of courses with an emphasis on global context, collaborative learning and critical thinking . It is a program that emphasizes high academic standards in disciplinary and interdisciplinary knowledge. IB Diploma Program : The International Baccalaureate Diploma Program is a two - year college level course of study . Students study IB English Language, IB Mathematics, IB Sci ence, IB History, and IB World Language. The sixth IB subject is the student’s choice of an additional course in Science, History, Arts or World Language . At least three IB courses are taken at higher level (HL), the remaining three at standard level (SL). The IB Diploma is awarded by the International Baccalaureate Organization to all students who meet the IB requirements and earn the nee d ed scores on the examinations. The IB Diploma is recognized as one of the most rigorous high school curricula in the world. CAS: Th e Washtenaw International High School Creativity, Action, and Service Program is designed to develop well - rounded, socially - engaged students who are empowered to make change in the world around them . e hours . Completion of the CAS requirement requires at least one each of a collaborative project, a project of significant duration, and a self - initiated project. Extended Essay: The extended essay i s an independent, self - directed research essay , culminating in a 4,000 - word paper. As a required c omponent, it provides a p ractical preparation for the types of undergraduate research required in college and the opportunity for students to engage in an in - depth analysis of a topic of interest within a chosen subject. Enrichments : In addition to students’ academic courses, all WIHI students must complete four enrichment credits over the course of their high school career. They are intended to complement the curriculum, provide a career connection, and explore a new interest . Ea ch enrichment is approved by WIHI administration and must demonstrate at least twenty hours of active learning and reflection on the part of the student. Clubs : WIHI offers a wide variety of clubs that encourage students to lead , learn, and engage in the ir community. Clubs allow students to participate in community service, civil engagement , and academic competitions.
