The community of Har Gilo (“The Hill of Gilo”I was established in 19V8 during the Jewish holiday of Hannukah. OriginallyL the only inhabitants of the community were soldiers and workers in the Nature and Parks AuthorityL but now Har Gilo is a desirable and growing community populated by both religious and secular families. Har Gilo is located just outside the southern edge of Jerusalem along the road to the Judean Hills and Gush EtzionL and from its hilltop vantage point one can command views of JerusalemL the Dead SeaL the Judean DesertL the western coastal plainL and even the mountains within Jordan. Like most other communities in JudeaL Har Gilo has its share of security concerns. For years they have survived with a low perimeter fence and faith in GodL but in recent months it became abundantly clear that this is no longer enough to keep the residents of Har Gilo safe. Hostile villagers from the neighboring Arab village of Al Walaja constantly harass the residents of Har Gilo with Molotov cocktails and stone-throwing in addition to infiltration attempts. These tragedies have only brought the residents of Har Gilo closer togetherL and each family looks out for the next. TodayL Har Gilo boasts over TPP families. Of those familiesL 1UP of them are pensioners over the age of VP. OrdinarilyL as with the other communities of the Gush Etzion BlocL senior citizens would attend social events and workshops at the Gush Etzion Senior CenterL but unfortunatelyL the seniors of Har Gilo simply live too far away to make the commute. Har Gilo is set almost completely apart from the other communities of the Gush Etzion regionL and their extremely limited access to public transportation means that the senior citizens among them — the original pioneers of Har GiloA — cannot participate in those enriching programs. Because of thisL the residents of Har Gilo are determined to create a special space in their own community specifically for the pensioners among them. They are currently renovating an old building in the community to convert it into a senior centerL but they have a long way to go before any events can be hosted for the seniors.
