Tego ® Swab Recommendation and Compatibility with Disinfecting Caps The Tego is a Closed needlefree access device specically designed for use with Hemodialysis Central Venous Catheters (CVCs) and related applications. The Tego is placed on the CVC for seven (7) days. All appropriate procedures, including flushing the catheter, According to the Tego directions for use, the device should be swabbed before each use in accordance with validated facility protocol. The Tego has been determined to be compatible with known swabbing chemicals including alcohol, betadine, chlorhexadine products, and alcohol based products such as Alcavis ® 50, Baccillol ® Plus, and Mikrozid ® AF. Some of these disinfection products, including betadine and chlorhexadine, may leave some residuals on the Tego. While these residuals are not a chemical compatibility problem for The Extended Use Microbial Challenge and Disinfection Study for the Tego is available for reference on the ICU Medical website. This study follows a pre-determined swab procedure that is described as an “aggressive circular motion for three seconds”. This swab was done with 70% isopropyl alcohol. The results of this study demonstrate that if you use this technique, the injection site of the Tego will be sterile each and every time you access. DISINFECTING CAPS New to the Intravenous Connector market are disinfecting caps that contain alcohol ‘baths,’ which are intended to be placed on alcohol bath over extended time periods; however, certain caps have design features which will damage the silicone seal of the Tego, and may result in a leak or loss of microbiological barrier. The following table outlines the results of testing at ICU Medical to determine compatibility.
