What's fun about poetry, is there are no rules!Some poems rhyme; some don't.Some poems are written in particular form; some aren't.Some poems are long; some are very short.They can be about anything!What they do have in common is a strength of emotion, carefully chosen language and poetic techniques.

5. BLACKOUT POETRYBlackout poetry is about taking an existing piece of prose text and turning it into a poem by blacking out all the words you don't want.You are left with only the words of your poem in white so they really stand out.

6. Some blackout poems are quite simple; some are beautifully illustrated.

Making Our Own Blackout Poems – Step 1You need to find a piece of prose to use.EITHER:Choose one of the extracts by clicking the link in the chat.ORUse a bit from a book that you like.  You will need to type it in.Harry Potter    Peter Pan     The Graveyard BookThe BFG    Rooftoppers     War Horse    Awful Auntie

Making Our Own Blackout Poems – Step 2Go to http://blackoutpoetry.glitch.me/ (link is in the Chat).Copy and paste your piece of prose text into the Custom Text box on the right-hand side.  Or type it in yourself.In the main box, click the words you want to keep and then click 'Blackout'.Check you are happy with your poem.  You can re-set it and do it again until you are happy.Once you have finished, Click Render Square or Render Full Text depending on how big your poem is.Save this image to your photos by pressing down on it.  Use mark-up to write your name on it.

What can I do to prepare for S1 English?READ, READ, READ...OR LISTEN!  Read anything you can – fiction, non-fiction, newspapers, website, cereal packets...If you don't like reading, listen to podcasts or audiobooks.  The more you read, the better you are at all areas of English!Keep focussing on those basic skills between now and August – full stops, capital letters, spelling, sentence variety.Come to SHS ready to learn and have fun!  We do some awesome topics from ghost stories to the Titanic, Cool Runnings to Travel Writing.
