In SharePoint 2013 we start down the path towards reducing reliance on AAM
It is still available, but going forward you should consider using host header site collections in a single web application
To get similar functionality as AAM, you can associate multiple Urls with a site collectionUse PowerShell to manage Urls (only for host header sites):Get-SPSiteUrl: see all the Urls and associated zonesSet-SPSiteUrl: add a Url and set the zone it’s inRemove-SPSiteUrl: remove a Url
AAMSlide3
You can still use zones in conjunction with the Urls for a site for different auth
methods
NOTE: When you create the site it is always created in the Default zoneBecause you’re not tied to zones, you can use more than 5 Urls for a siteIt supports off-box SSL termination tooAAM (cont.)Slide4
There may still be scenarios where host named site collections are not a good choice. Those are:
You
need to use the out of box Self Service Site Creation featureUnique wild card inclusions are required within a Web applicationYou can create unique wild card inclusions per-web application, but wildcard inclusions are shared across all host-named sitesYou want the additional security provided by multiple web apps with separate app poolsWhen You Should Use Path-Based SitesSlide5
Self-service site creation (SSSC) has been revamped
You can specify a custom form that should be used to create a new site
That form can be in the same web app or an entirely different web appYou can specify whether to create a new Site Collection or new WebYou can specify the parent web if using it to create a new web, or let the user pick an inclusion if creating site collectionsNOTE: Remember if you use the farm creation wizard, SSSC is turned On for the web app it creates, but Off for all other web appsYou can also define policies in a content type hub and require or ask that each new site uses one of those policiesSelf Service Site CreationSlide6
Use the following steps to create policies to be used when creating new site collection with SSSC:
Go to your content type hub site
Navigate to Site Settings, then “Site Policies” under Site Collection AdministrationCreate new policies – which determine when to close and/or delete a siteClick the Manage publishing for this policy link and configure the policy to be publishedAfter the content hub publishing job runs, the policies appear in the new site collection pageUsing Policies with SSSCSlide7
You still need “Use Self-Service Site Creation” rights
There is a “new site” link in your personal site
onlyScsignup.aspx still exists but there are no links to it out of the box; it is blocked in o365Clicking it brings up the new site form:NOTE: You do NOT get to pick a site template – all are created as Team sites; you must create a custom creation form to
use a different template
Creating New Site CollectionsSlide8
Since the link for new site collections only appears in personal sites you need to configure SSSC for the My Site host
If you want to use SSSC in other web apps, you must enable SSSC on them too
In the My Site you need to configure SSSC to use the web app where new site collections should be created:Use the custom form optionFor the Url, point to the selfservicecreate.aspx page in the web app where you want to create site collectionsPlanning Self Service Site CreationSlide9
