We are all slaves to our habits. Some of us can’t quit snacking and some waste too much time on social media. Some of us are impulsive and end up getting into arguments with friends and family. We’re also often told that it is easy to get rid of bad habits if you try hard enough. But reality is far from pleasing – there is a huge disparity between our goal and its actual pursuit.

Before you set out to correct a bad habit, it is important to understand what constitutes a bad habit. Simply put, it is a behavior that is against our long term goals, be it living a healthy life, maintaining a good relationship or earning straight A’s. Here’s how you can break your bad habits:

1. Find A Replacement Routine That Gives You A Similar Reward:

The reason that these bad habits stick around for so long is that they lead to short-term rewards. Your brain is hard-wired to care a lot more about short term pleasures than worry about things in the long-term. Replacing the momentary pleasure with something similar can help you stay productive. For example, if you are tired and unable to manage homework assignments, you could hire our online class help tutors as a temporary solution, rather than skip the task or submit them late.

2. Find Out The Actual Reason For Your Bad Habit:

If you are addicted to junk food, dig deep to find reasons for your bad habit. Is it because of the taste, or is it because you are bored? Do you crave junk food at some specific time of the day? Sometimes, it is the not the food itself, but the company of friends that you love.

3. Out of Sight Out Of Mind:

Remove yourself from situations that trigger bad habits. For example, if you are addicted to social media, uninstall them from your phone or log out of the site after you access them on your laptop/desktop. As for Facebook, you could also temporarily deactivate your account.

4. One Month Challenge:

If quitting your lousy habit forever seems daunting, try a one month challenge. This technique helps because a lot of students can’t moderate their bad habits. Giving it up forever is, of course, a difficult task. But if you start out with a 30-day challenge; abstaining from that practice for just 30 days can help you stay out of it.

Habits define our behaviour – they could either support our endeavours or stall them. Use the above mentioned tips to become successful.
