WE KNEW THAT WE HAD TO WORK AS A TEAM

ALL OF US TOGETHER

Slide5

REALITY

The first cases started around mid March and rapidly increased and the peak was around 2nd

week in April and continued till around 2nd week in May.All elective activity was stopped. The theatres converted into ICU called TICU (theatres) and RICU (Recovery)

At one stage recovery was full so were quite a few of our theatres

Slide6

REALITY

We were busy.We went to more than 3 times our capacity.

All pts were level 3We had a Non COVID ICU as well

Slide7

PPE

Mask fit Testing Different masks availableGloves

Gown or Hazmat suitsDonning and doffing trainingVisors

Slide8

ME IN MY PPE

Slide9

I FELT SAFE IN GOOD PPE

OUR HOSPITAL GAVE US ENOUGH PPE

Slide10

Slide11

CHALLENGES WITH PPE

Took long time to wear

Sometime masks leaked No touching mouth and faceVery hot and sweatyCould not go to the toiletCould not hear others and could not be heard

InjuriesCleaning

Slide12

WHAT HAVE WE DONE WELL

Working together in unfamiliar circumstancesWorking in teams

Expanding to theatresTheatre teams and ICU teams working togetherHaving a COVID and Non COVID ICUNo ICU Consultants off sick as yet

Few ICU staff unwellOur catering services and restaurants gave us nice food Skype Calls

Slide13

No visitors were allowed

We used to ring families very day and regularly update them

I could feel their anxiety and helpless feeling about not being at their loved ones’ bedsideOne extubated patient thought I was an alien and so were the other nurses. We reassured her.

I used to dance with the nurses. We cried at times together but we encouraged ech other.I tried my best to support my staff and trainees.

I did chanting sessions at our well being centre.

Slide14

OUR SKYPE ANGELS

Our secretary Melanie and manager Sharon on the left volunteered to connect

the patients with their families on SKYPE calls. They did a great job. They were

recently awarded The Hospital heroes award.

Slide15

MY CONCERNS

Unfamiliar environment for some staffLong tiring shifts

Unknown diseaseOverwhelming feeling when a patient dies in front of your eyes even when we tried our bestNo visitors allowed initiallyPatients dying, no closure for families ( We have started bereavement counselling).

Communication between inside and outside.

Slide16

CONCERNS

Self blameHow to support staff and traineesFear of catching infection and infecting your loved ones.

PTSDWill it come again? COVID NOT GOING TO GO COMPLETELYComplaiscensy Nightmares Sleep disorders,

All the clapping is temporary

Slide17

THE FUTURE CHALLENGES

Elective surgery : New rulesNumber of beds decreasing, maintaining 2 m distance

Reluctance of patients to come in for surgery, long waiting listsExtremely sick patients with chronic diseases presenting late and increased mortalityGuidelines for isolation prior to operations Swab testing 72 hrs prior and results availability.

Shielding policy for staff2nd wave increase in admissions nowExhausted staffEnough PPE?

Slide18

BUT I AM POSITIVE

THAT TOGETHER

WE SHALL OVERCOME THIS .

Slide19

Slide20

WE WILL NEVER FORGET THE BRAVE NHS CORONA WARRIORS, OUR COLLEAGUES WHO HAVE LOST THEIR LIVES DURING THE PANDEMIC

YOU SACRIFICE WILL BE NEVER FORGOTTEN, REST IN PEACE MY FRIENDS.

WE HAVE TO LOOK AFTER EACH OTHERS SAFETY.
