Go Gifu Page 1 Summer 2019 Gifu Prefecture Tourism and Event Newsletter Vol. 42 Summer 2019 GO GIFU Hida - Osaka Falls Located at the foot of 3,067 - meter - tall Mt. Ontake is the Gero district of hsaka (often called “ Hida hsaka” to distinguish it from the city), an area blessed with a bountiful natural environment and an unusually large amount waterfalls. Just in the district alone are over 1,000 waterfalls that have been discovered with 216 of them towering over 5 meters tall. Hida Osaka Falls is the local NPO that provides English speaking guides who can take you around 14 different courses ranging from simple strolls through the forest to hardcore trekking routes. Three waterfalls can be seen without a guide on the Mitsudaki Course which starts at Gandate Park (a small trail maintenance fee is required). You will find plenty of activities to keep yourself busy here as there are a large selection of outdoor events and festivals that are only possible to experience during the summer. Just make sure to carry plenty of water with you because the summers in Gifu are hot! Escape the heat and take a refreshing walk through the Gandate Ravine (Hida - Osaka) which remains cool even during the summer Enjoy the colorful vegetation of Gandate Park Try some shower climbing, which has you actually going into the crystal clear water! It’s time to put on your best dancing shoes geta (wooden clogs often worn during bon dancing and summer festivals) and take part in one of Japan’s Top Three Bon Dance Festivals. The Gujo Dance Festival is held on 30 non - consecutive nights from mid - July to early September with the highlight of the festival being the period of four nights during the Obon holiday period in August when the dancing is held all night long. It starts off with the exhilarating Dragon - God Fire Festival on day one and then continues on with a series of events like bon dancing and firework performances. Brief schedule (please note that times are from last year’s festival and may vary slightly): ※ 8/1 (Thurs) Dragon - God Fire Festival: 7:00 pm ~ 9:00 pm ※ 8/2 (Fri) Mikoshi Shrine Parade: 6:00 pm ~ 9:30 pm, Gero Dance: 8:00 pm ~ 10:30 pm ※ 8/3 (Sat) Gero Hot Spring Firework Musical Performance: 8:00 pm ~ 8:45 pm, Gero Dance: 9:00 pm ~ 10:30 pm ※ 8/4 (Sun) Utazuka Traditional Music Festival: 7:00 pm ~ 10:00 pm (Ideyu Evening Market will be held simultaneously) Location: Downtown area of Gero Hot Springs Web: http://www.city.gero.lg.jp/kankou/ Directions: 5 minute’s walk from Jw Gero Station Gujo Dance Festival 郡上おどり Nagara River Cormorant Fishing ぎふ長良川鵜飼 Cormorant fishing on the Nagara River holds a history of 1,300 years and sees six usho cormorant fishermen display their talent and mastery of the craft. The cormorant fishing here is watched by over a hundred thousand visitors from Japan and around the world each year. Gifu Castle ・ Mt. Kinka (Gifu City) Take an aerial tramway up to the top of Mt. Kinka or walk up one of the 10 hiking trails that range in difficulty and require anywhere between 30 ~ 70 min to finish. Gujo Hachiman Castle ( Gujo ) Nicknamed the Castle of the Sky, the top floor of Gujo Hachiman Castle offers a fantastic view of the surrounding mountains and Gujo Hachiman Castle. Hike takes about 20 ~ 30 min from the Gujo Hachiman Jokamachi Plaza (there is a parking lot at the very top but the road up there is rather windy and narrow). Mori Castle Ruins - Shirodaira Lookout Point ( Gero ) Not very well know, the Shirodaira Lookout Point is only a 20 - minute walk from the Jomon Park parking lot and offers a fantastic view of the Gero Hot Springs area (total time from JR Gero Station is 50 ~ 60 min ). Images on Right Images on Left Naegi Castle Ruins (Nakatsugawa) See a panoramic view of the Kiso River, Mt. Ena , Ena Valley, and Nakatsugawa City. Hike from JR Nakatsugawa Station will take 60 - 90 min OR you can walk 20 min from castle ruins’ parking lot.
