There is more than one way to write a sentence, but in English, we usually write in Standard syntax, SVO.Slide6
How can Yoda help us with the Bard?
Yoda speaks in a particular grammatical structure that is similar to Shakespeare.
Yoda tends to speak with nonstandard syntax, while we speak in standard syntax.
Wait…
syn… what? Slide7
What is Syntax?
Study of structure of language
Refers to the way words are arranged together, and the relationship
between them.
(what we perceive when someone says something) to semantics (what that utterance means)We don’t care WHAT is being said, just HOW it is said (in regards to syntax)Slide8
What is Syntax not?
Phonology: study of sound systems and how sounds combine
Morphology: study of how words are formed from smaller parts (morphemes)
Semantics: study of meaning of language
Linguistics!!Slide9
Looking at Structure
Some words:
the a small nice big very boy girl sees likes
Some good sentences:
the boy likes a girl the small girl likes the big girla very small nice boy sees a very nice boySome bad sentences:
*the boy the girl*small boy nice girlCan we find words which in some way behave alike?Slide10
Looking at Structure
good sentences:
the boy
likes
a girl the small girl
likes the big girl
a very small nice boy
sees
a very nice boy
Who?
Does what?
To What?Slide11
Looking at Structure
the boy
likes
a girl Who?
Does what? To What?
Subject
Verb
Object
When a word does the same job as another word, then we know it behaves the same.
the cat
eats
a mouse
the
erotylidae
gormadnizes
mushrooms
the tired sloth
likes
to sleep
but
a girl
is singing
a song
about rainbows near the tree
.
Slide12
Standard Syntax
Every sentence has a Subject, Verb, and (sometimes) an Object.
Standard Syntax is SVO
The cat eats its dinner.
The boy plays chess.Slide13
Non Standard Syntax (aka, Yoda and Shakespeare
Use SVO Regularly, these guys do not!
Seriously, these guys do not regularly use SVO (standard syntax) for most of their sentences. From Yesterday,
Yoda says:
Found someone you have.
Help you I can.
My home this is.
Stay and help you I will.Slide14
Let’s look back at our Sandwich
What are the different types of nonstandard syntax?
Let’s look at sandwiches…Slide15
Enter:
Ate I the sandwich.
I the sandwich ate.
I ate the sandwich.
Ate the sandwich I.
The sandwich I ate.The sandwich ate I.Slide16
What about Shakespeare?
Ready you are to tackle Shakespeare, my young Padawans!
Hint: Identify SVO in each sentence first, then try rearranging it.
DO NOT CHANGE WORDS OR ADD WORDS
.
You don’t have to know what the word means.
Look at how it
FUNCTIONS
in the sentence. Slide17
Reorganizing Shakespeare
Shakespeare says:
She it is.
To strike him dead I hold it not a sin.
There will I stay for thee.Slide18
Unlocking Shakespeare’s language
Rearrange all the words on the front so that they are all in
SVO
.
Focus on STRUCTURE
. How is the word functioning in the sentence?
Is it a
thing
doing an action?
(=noun/pronoun)
Is it an
action
?
(=verb)
Is it
receiving the action
?
(=object)
Is it
none of these
?
(=
phrase..aka
movable piece)
On the back, rewrite the sentences so that the
MEANING
is clear.
This may mean that you will have to change words, add words, or rearrange the sentence.
If you need help with vocabulary (word meaning) ask your teacher!Slide19
